Wrestling: Cox, Western Branch lead districts

Posted to: High Schools Sports

Host Cox put eight wrestlers in today’s finals and took a commanding lead after the first day of the Beach District tournament.

The Falcons lead second-place Kellam 193.5-146 after Friday’s matches.

The two teams will go head-to-head in the finals at 103 pounds, where the Falcons’ Cody Stageberg will face Hayden Felch, and at 130, where Michael Chalfant will take on the Knights’ Brennan O’Shea.

Other finalists for the Falcons are defending state champions Caleb Richardson at 112 and Ben Dorsay at 145, four-time private school state champion Bryan Whitt at 119, Dashon Eure at 135, Conor O’Hara at 215 and Ross Burbank at 285.

Kellam’s other four finalists are 2009 state runner-up Aaron Runzo at 125, Austin D’Amico at 140, Tanner Ketcherside at 152 and Turner Bishop at 160.

The finals will have either a Cox or Kellam wrestler or both in every bout except 171 and 189. At 171, Kempsville’s Bryce Barnes will face Landstown’s Trevor Wentt and at 189, it will be Ocean Lakes’ Jacob Coleman and Kempsville’s Austin Dickey.

First Colonial, with 90 points, goes into today’s action in third place, followed by Bayside with 87.5 and Ocean Lakes with 81.

In the Southeastern District tournament, Western Branch owns a 3.5-point lead over Oscar Smith heading into today’s action at Grassfield High School.

The Bruins, who last won the tournament title in 2001, totaled 155.5 points and have six wrestlers in the finals.

“We’re where we expected to be,” said Western Branch coach Chris Martin, whose finalists are Joel Theroux at 112, Wil Everette at 119, Afsheen Hashemy at 125, Jack Miller at 135, Nathan Cook at 171 and Rico Gonzales at 215. “We didn’t win some of those close matches I thought we should have, but we also won some I didn’t think we’d win.”

The Tigers, who haven’t clinched the district trophy in more than 30 years, are at 152 points and have five wrestlers in the finals – Bryan Saravia at 103, Spencer Buettner at 140, Ryan Land at 145, Anthony Copeland at 152 and Tyler Warren at 189.

Great Bridge also placed five in the finals and is in third with 121 points.

“We brought 10 guys,” Wildcats coach Josh Feldman said. “Our goal was to put five in the finals and we did that. As for tomorrow, five champions would be better, but we’re happy where we are.”

Note: Because of the threat of nasty weather, today’s wrestling schedules have been altered.

In the Beach, today’s consolation action is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. and the finals are at 3:30 p.m.

In the Southeastern, consolation action is scheduled for 10 a.m. and the finals are at 5 p.m. – but round-to-round action will be back-to-back, so times could be pushed back.

The Eastern District tournament at Lake Taylor will also feature back-to-back rounds, with quarterfinals starting at 9 a.m. and the finals scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
