RICHMOND

Bills that would ease restrictions on guns in bars and in cars are headed to the desk of Gov. Bob McDonnell, even as a Senate subcommittee seeks to bottle up other gun-related measures.

By a vote of 72-27, the House of Delegates passed a bill that would allow customers with permits to have concealed handguns in restaurants and other establishments that serve alcohol. Gun-carrying patrons could face a misdemeanor charge if they consume alcohol.

The legislation, SB334, already has passed the Senate. The bill now goes to McDonnell, who has said he will sign the measure. Former Gov. Timothy M. Kaine vetoed similar bills.

The Republican-controlled House also passed a Senate-sponsored bill, SB408, that would allow gun owners without concealed-carry permits to store firearms in locked vehicle compartments, another measure that met with Kaine's veto.

Tuesday 's votes are significant because the Senate has sent some House-sponsored bills to a hastily formed subcommittee. The Democrat-dominated subcommittee is expected to kill several gun bills. The panel had not been formed when SB334 and SB408 cleared the Senate.

i can't wait to see

I can't wait to see signs on the doors of bars, restaurants, and clubs........NO GUNS ALLOWED!

Maybe a few will, but many

Maybe a few will, but many have done so in the past and then taken them down because many people who don't even own a gun still support the right to do so. Look at Starbucks, they are not backing down and they have the Brady Bunch smearing them right now, but they are standing their ground.

Guns and Alcohol continued

No rhyme or reason. Just do me and my family a favor would you? Please don't catch us in the crossfire as you battle the criminal element at Red Lobster.

Guns and Alcohol

Frankly this has got to be one of the dumbest laws I could ever dream up. Let's see what we can agree on. Think we all agree that guns and drinking alcohol is probably not a great idea. Think we know that drinking and arguing doesn't result in great outcomes either. So now we introduce a gun into an environment that often (not every time) but ften leads to disagreement and argument. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out the potential outcome. I don't own a gun --- have never felt I needed one --- but I don't question the right of the individual to own one. But seriously, all of the pro-gun arguments posted here are silly. If you feel you need to pack a gun to feel safe visiting your local Red Lobster I seriously question your sanity. Do you guys sit at a table and size-up every one who wlaks through the door? Do you say to yourself -- I need to keep my eye on that one --- he looks suspicious? Someone said this law is intended to keep law-abiding folks from accidentally carrying their gun into a Red Lobster? If you are so used to packing that you forget you are packing I question your competence. Whatever, this is Virgina and there is no rhyme or reason to this

You are putting this at an

You are putting this at an elementary level; I don’t fault you for your limited thoughts. It’s not about being IN the “Red Lobster”. It is about being safe coming and going through the parking lot to enjoy a meal. Hilltop North is a pretty safe place right? Well, the woman that was kidnapped, raped, and then killed from that parking lot proves that you are wrong. It’s not about being safe in your comfort zone, it’s about when all options of escape are gone you at least have a way to defend yourself. The lobster tank does not pose a threat, but thugs love people who may be able to afford those tasty crustation.

increase taxes on all guns and ammo and BTW jerrmflux

Increase taxes on all guns and ammo. If they can do it to cigarettes they can do it to them. Besides the state needs the revenue.

BTW Jermflux I never called you a hick. Would you like for me to quote some of the sanme you have called me?

I still say gun advocates have become a bunch of paranoid little boys with toys, still trying to play cops and robbers. Good luck with that!

Again I ask who will monitor this law????

You left out little girls

You left out little girls Gertz. The little girls I know carry a 9MM Taurus in their hand bag or fanniepak. You don't want to be sexist do you? Silly me....progressives are exempt form having a double standard. What was I thinking?

1939

As a young boy working in a street market on the weekends I witnessed many people with numbers tattooed on their arms. All were survivors of concentration camps. All of them said they wished they had guns when the knock on the door came and just like the blind today thought it would never happen. Are we so civilized that this is just paranoia in today's day and age? Ask those in the Balkans, 75% of Africa and 95% of the Islamic world. That is the short list.
I will die before I relinquish my only tool to ensure freedom and fight any side road behind the bush tactics to hinder the operation and ownership of said tools of freedom.

great idea about the taxes

We should reinstitute poll taxes. If they can do it to cigarettes they can do it to them. We should institute a tax on newspapers. If they can do it to cigarettes they can do it to them. We should institute a tax on churches, who are currently exempt from taxes. If they can do it to cigarettes they can do it to them. We should insitute a tax on public demonstrations. If they can do it to cigarettes they can do it to them.

I just figured that as long as we were proposing taxes on one Constitutionally-protected right we might as well tax others. Besides the state needs the revenue.
