As health care vote approaches, Nye remains undecided

Posted to: Health News

As the House prepares to vote Sunday on a final version of health care overhaul legislation, U.S. Rep. Glenn Nye said Friday he has “serious concerns” that must be overcome for him to support the bill.

Nye, who is part of a dwindling group of House Democrats who have yet to signal their vote, said he hasn’t made up his mind but needs to see evidence that the legislation lowers the amount paid at a doctor’s office or a hospital.

“I’m going to make my decision based on the effect on the people I represent,” said Nye, whose 2nd Congressional District includes Virginia Beach, parts of Norfolk and Hampton and the Eastern Shore. “I still have serious concerns about if it will address the underlying issue of the cost of health care.”

At the same time, South Hampton Roads’ two other congressmen   know how they will vote. U.S. Rep. Randy Forbes  of Chesapeake  opposes the bill, saying it goes against the will of the American people. U.S. Rep. Bobby Scott  of Newport News  favors the bill, calling it a “historic step” toward improving health care.

All three said they have received unusually large numbers of e-mails, letters and phone calls  from constituents and others hoping to sway their votes.

Nye, like many undecided Democrats, has been the focus of extra attention. He has been courted or pummeled in e-mails, robocalls, newspaper ads  and TV commercials aimed at him directly or at people being urged to call his office. The first-term congressman, who is expected to face a tough election in the fall, said he doesn’t mind the attention.

“I think it’s a good thing. I’m hearing from people on all sides of the issue,” he said. “I asked for a tough job.”

The health care legislation he’ll be voting on is complex. Among other things, it will require most people to have some form of health insurance, ban insurers from denying coverage to people with pre-existing medical conditions  and require many employers to offer  workers insurance or pay a government fee.

The bill would expand Medicaid to cover 16 million poor people without health insurance and offer subsidies to moderate-income people to buy health insurance.

Part of that extra government expense would be covered by higher taxes on more costly insurance plans and increasing the income tax on couples earning more than $250,000 and individuals earning more than $200,000.

Nye said he favors many of the provisions, including requirements that insurers no longer can reject  those with pre-existing conditions. But he said he needs to look
more closely at how the bill would affect small businesses.

Nye  objects to the bill’s proposal to cut supplemental Medicaid payments to children’s hospitals, including Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters in Norfolk. Nye said those hospitals could lose $16 billion under the current bill.

There is also concern that participants in the military’s Tricare health plan may be subject to some health care provisions, under the latest version of the bill. Under previous versions, Tricare patients were exempt.

Even with those issues, Nye said his predominant issue is reducing the cost of health care. He made the same argument in November when he voted against a similar health care bill that passed  the House.

The legislation being considered Sunday is a Senate-approved health care plan that has been amended by House Democrats. Details of the  bill were given to Nye and other House members  Thursday.

Nye said Friday that the Senate plan, approved Dec. 24,  didn’t take strong steps to reduce  the cost of care, but he needed to study details of the House leadership’s changes before he decides.

“We have to weigh the ups and the downs,” Nye said. “I support health care reform and I understand the need for reform, but it’s not reform at any cost.”

His Hampton Roads colleagues decided how they would vote long ago.

Forbes,  a Republican whose 4th District stretches from Chesapeake and Suffolk to rural areas west of Richmond, has been an unwavering opponent of all the Democrats’ health care plans. He argues they bring too much government involvement into people’s lives and will be too expensive.

He  favors  legislation to end the denial of pre-existing medical conditions, end any bans on insurance firms competing across state lines and allow  workers to  keep their health insurance if they change or lose their job. He also wants limits on malpractice awards.

Scott said he’s confident the bill will pass and looks forward to promoting his yes vote when he runs for re-election in November.

“I can’t wait for someone to stand up at a debate and tell people – some of whom have pre -existing conditions and have insurance for the first time – why they want to repeal what we did,” Scott said with a laugh. “I can’t wait to watch that.”

U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, who voted for the Senate bill in December, said if the  measure becomes law, it will require more work.

“This is a cobbled-together combination of reforms that in many cases don’t go far enough,” Warner said Friday. “But it will shock the system and force policymakers and providers – I hope … to get to the right solution.”

Ration Health Care - Its Here

Folks ration health care is here. HMO's - tell your doctor whether or not they can run a test. the Doctor's are not making the decision, an administrator in an HMO decides whether or not you can have a test. some doctors are now working for the large health care companies that tell them they can only spend 10 MINUTES, yes 10 MINUTES with a patient; they are running an assembly line with us right now! Get a life - the fear that you have about health care already exist. We need to pass the plan, and get our congressman to make the necessary amendments until we get health care done correctly. This is why we have a 3 part government, the legislative, the judicial and the executive. The legislature make the laws, and finally it is "We the people" we vote people in office who represent us, and vote them out when they don't. This type of government will work as long as we make sure that we fight to change the things that are wrong and support things that are right.

Focus Congress to Do their Job! We have to

Now is the time to force Congress to do their jobs. I don't like everything in the health care bill, so what I will do, is send a message to my representative requesting an amendment to make the necessary changes. That is how our government works. We set policy and we change the policy that does not work or is not the right policy. We don't sit around complaining and whinning. I need you all to Man-Up - stop being a brat and Be Americans and make our government work properly. There will always be bills that pass that we don't agree with 100%, but the people need to do their jobs. If you guys would stop your foolishness, we could be successful. As a female, I am sick of hearing you mouth. Find one part of the bill that you feel needs to be repaired and work to get it repaired, not by calling folks names, but by contacting the Congressman and sitting down with a plan that makes sense and will work for the good of the nation. - Stop whinning please. You are making me ill!!!

Notice to all Republicans,

Notice to all Republicans, don't do what you did when you opposed the government bailouts, then turn around and beg the government for your share of the pie, stand firm and refuse any benefits if this bill passes. Save face, that way the rest of us will save money since their will be fewer patients to insure.

Doesn't matter Glenn,

Once Scott Rigel starts his campaign ads showing him wrapped in a flag, much like those dealer commercials, your dog and pony show stand for the military will be wiped out like chalk marks on a sidewalk.
I hope it's not too late for David Ashe to run against you in the a democratic primary.
Kudos to Bobby Scott for listening to HIS constituency.

Time for Nye to Go!!!

As I said earlier, Nye is a Republican in sheep's clothing! He must leave as soon as possible. He is as bad as Thelma Drake!

Support Health Care

Part II
If you want to make a real change in this nation, spend time informing Congress how to get it right and not make it about political parties but about results. If we as Americans will work for the good of the people, we will be able to have a government that is smaller and more efficient. While we are screaming at each other, the elected officials are using our actions to keep us off balance, angry and thereby they are allowed to waste more of your money and spend time on every boondoggle that they can come up with. Ladies and Gentlemen - forget the two political parties - they argue all day and sit on the beach, drinking your tax dollars and enjoying life, while you are living paycheck to paycheck. By the way, you are already paying for every uninsured person out there, they currently go to the emergency room for FREE!

Support Health Care

Everyone is concerned about the health care bill, however, no one has asked Congress to do their job. There is a major problem with our current system, and it needs to be fixed. Those of us who work for a corporation are responsible for solving problems, likewise, a congressman who is paid an average of $170,000.00 a year plus perks should be competent enough to solve a problem that they have supposedly been working on for over 40+ years. You people are incompetent, why would you allow anyone who receives your tax dollars to be irreponsible? These folks need to do their jobs, while you idiots are out there debating each other. Give me a break. Tell Congress to do their job - vote for the plan, and then change it, take out the crap and make it a workable plan for the people. This is not about the President, this is about the American people wasting time bickering, while the elected officials are making deals. Stop being stupid, make Congress do their jobs, stop making deals and fix the health care system.

VA, Tricare and Health Reform

I am active duty Navy, and recently my wife (who was active duty until this Jan.) gave birth to our first child at NMCP. Thank you to all of the taxpayers who allowed us to celebrate our new family, and get treatment for jaundice with a UV-bed, and not have to worry about how much anything would cost. Having seen up close and personal what a govt.-run health care system looks like, I can see that while it has it's pros and cons, the quality of the service we got was generally very good.
Having read the blogs, watched the debates, and actually read the pertinent sections of the Senate HC bill, it's pretty sad seeing some Senators, notably Scott Brown of MA, trying to scare vets into thinking that HCR will take away their hard-earned benefits. It won't, plain and simple. VA is it's own plan, not an insurance company, and nothing in the bill that affects health insurance reform changes anything in the VA, or Tricare plans. It's rather odd, that someone who is ostensibly against a govt.-run HC plan would argue that a bill is flawed because it would reduce access to a govt.-run plan or lower the benefits of the plan. Shouldn't they be arguing for a plan that takes people out of

GOP Supporters say they will throw Nye out of office next term

Well, Nye, as someone who has been in the thick of it with our military you can easily see that you just have to put your political life on the line and do the patriotic thing; vote yes!!!!! Serve country above self, above cooperate entities and for the American people.

I WANT HEALTHCARE REFORM

I'm 100% in favor of healthcare reform. But this bill won't fix healthcare. I don't believe a bill that the republicans put together will fix it either.

Almost all politicians are self-serving, underhanded d-bags that should be replaced.

Obama, Pelosi, and Reid should all be impeached under US Constitution. Article II, Sec. 4 "The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, BRIBERY, or the other high Crimes of Misdemeanors." BRIBERY 1) money or favor given or promised to a person in a position of trust ...to influence his judgment or conduct 2) something that serves to induce or influence""

There thug-politics, bribes and backrooms deals are disgusting and unAmerican. IMPEACH THEM ALL.
