Hokies Hoops, Vol. 13 (Hudson Out edition) ...

Just got word that Virginia Tech’s second-leading scorer, shooting guard Dorenzo Hudson, will not play tonight at Georgia Tech. He’s not even out with the team while they do stretches.

A team spokesperson said Hudson’s right foot injury – described by Hudson as a bone bruise and “maybe a minor fracture” – has not become a season-ending injury. “It’s the same as the other night,” the spokesman said. “He could go the other night and just didn’t feel like he could go tonight.”

Obviously, that’s a big blow to the Hokies’ hopes of knocking off the Yellow Jackets, who are 14-1 at home. No word yet on who will start in Hudson’s place. Likely either Erick Green or Manny Atkins, both true freshmen.

Green is a point guard who would likely take over that role from Malcolm Delaney, who would slide to shooting guard (which he sometimes does anyway). Green has played in all 29 games, starting one. He is averaging 13.9 minutes, 3.0 points and one assist per game.

Atkins has played in just 19 of the team’s 29 games and only 9 of 15 conference games. Overall, he is averaging 7.6 minutes and 2.3 points per game.

Either choice would be a significant drop-off from Hudson, who is averaging 16.7 points and shooting 44.6 percent in 15 ACC games. He shot 50 percent and poured in 21 points against N.C. State after he had been declared a “game-time decision” by the medical staff because of his foot.

You can read his comments in the post below this one, from Thursday afternoon, about how his foot was feeling and the outlook going forward. While this is a big blow for tonight’s game, it’s worth considering that it will mean Hudson’s foot has gotten more than a week’s rest between N.C. State and the ACC tournament.
