A deputy sheriff was arrested Tuesday and charged with sex crimes against a teenage girl.

According to Lt. Tim Whitt, a spokesman for the Franklin police, Ronnie Williams Carwile, 47, has been an investigator with the Isle of Wight sheriff's department since 2004. He lives in Franklin, and Witt said investigators believe the crimes occurred at Carwile's home between September and January.

Carwile, a sergeant, was charged with five offenses, including felony carnal knowledge. He has been released on a $10,000 bond, according to Whitt.

Isle of Wight Sheriff C.W. "Charlie" Phelps said Carwile has been placed on administrative duties pending the outcome of the investigation.
