Tione Vincent's two children lost a father.
Police Officer Sean Fleming nearly lost his life.
On Tuesday, a jury found Willie Simmons and Dedrion Short must pay for those losses.
The panel recommended a 36-year sentence for Simmons and an 83-year term for Short for their roles in the June kidnapping, murder and rush-hour shootout with police.
The men had faced maximum sentences of life in prison. Short, 32, could spend the rest of his life behind bars. A judge is scheduled to formally sentence the men in June.
The jury found Short guilty of six felonies: first-degree murder, abduction for financial benefit, malicious wounding of a police officer and three weapons charges. They found Simmons, 21, guilty on four counts: first-degree murder, abduction and two weapons offenses. Simmons was acquitted of malicious wounding of Fleming and a third weapons charge.
Outside the courthouse, Fleming said he had expected a lighter sentence and was "pleased with the outcome." Vincent's widow, Ivy, also said she was happy with the jury's decision.
Eight witnesses took the stand Tuesday morning during the trial's sentencing phase. Some left jurors in tears.
Ivy Vincent said her husband lived his entire life in Norfolk's Berkley neighborhood, where he was picked up at gunpoint on June 1. Short, Simmons and Christopher "C.C." White rode with Vincent in a van until the vehicle crashed into the guardrail of a ramp to Interstate 64 at George Washington Highway.
Tione Vincent, 29, was found shot to death in the back seat after the three men fled.
Ivy Vincent said her husband was a great friend, cousin and father. She stopped several times to cry and sob. "The entire community feels the void," she said.
Fleming told jurors he didn't have time for fear when he saw White level an AK-47 at his Jeep. "As soon as I saw the rifle turn toward me, there was no time for thought," he said. Trapped in his vehicle, Fleming fired back through his windshield.
He looked down and saw blood everywhere. "My arm was covered. The grip of my gun was covered," he said. "The floorboard of my Jeep was covered."
He spent nearly a week in the hospital recovering from five gunshot wounds. Doctors removed 6 inches of his small intestine, which left a foot-long scar on his stomach.
The mothers of Short and Simmons spoke on their behalf. Both said their sons were active in sports and their communities growing up.
Simmons' attorney, A. Robinson Winn, asked for mercy. "We're not making any excuses today. He was dead wrong," Winn said.
But, he said, "there's still a whole lot of life for Willie Simmons."
But prosecutor Kerry Roberts reminded the jury that Simmons and Short were no longer boys. They were men, she said, responsible for choices they made on June 1.
Roberts asked the jury to consider the maximum punishment: "They chose their actions, and they should suffer their consequences."
The trial lasted nine days, taking in scores of witnesses, exhibits and emotional testimony. Three witnesses misidentified the defendants. One complained that Short was flashing gang signs from the defense table. Short took the stand in his own defense, contending that he had been forced into the scheme.
The jury deliberated for two final hours before reaching a verdict on the sentences.
Families and friends of both victims and defendants quietly left the courtroom after the verdict.
On the courthouse steps, Fleming said he was glad the trial was over. He sat through several days of testimony, reliving the chase and shootout that almost took his life.
But, he added, that was not new to him: "I have daily reminders of it."

Abolish life sentences
and execute them. Doesn't matter what color, or nationality. We have become way too liberal. Politicians, liewayers, and judges, clamp down on law breakers and protect our families from demented people like these two. Send a message and put them away for good.
I AGREE!!!
And since there is no statute of limitation let’s go back and look at all our countries famous lynching photos and let’s charge all spectators with accessory no matter the age at the time children and all. Then bring civil suites on all living relatives since we all want justice across the board.
Another 2 thugs down for the count and we must pay
Another 2 thugs put away. Can the state pawn their suits?
Like it or not
~Virginia building and financing more jails than schools (leading to some of the problems we have in education today), using welfare to make a generation dependent and lazy giving then drugs and alcohol to pacify them and continue dysfunction. Then separating them and making some haves and the others have not’s. Thus giving, the haves the desire to speak on the inability of the have not’s out of a hatred and or lack of understanding of one’s past. That’s Real “Black on Black Crime” Please! Like they said on Oprah yesterday, know thy past; know thy Self! Rest in peace Tione!
The Real!
It’s funny to me that in a certain segment of society it is cool to praise Elvis a known drug addict and racist; or Charles Manson a known mass murderer who has been in jail almost as long as I have been on the earth at the TAX PAYERS EXPENSE; or even John Gotti who’s relatives had a TV show just recently. Not to mention you can turn on Nancy Grace everyday and see another child abduction, molestation, and murder; school shooting, violence in the work place etc. But every time this same segment of society talks about black society, it comes with a certain distain. These people commenting for the most part could care less about Tione Vincent or his family. This is just another opportunity to spew their racist views (Tee Baggers) about how bad one segment of society is to take the focus off who created and or intentionally caused the dysfunction in the black community( “Willie Lynch Law” still in affect). ~Slavery Legal Breeding, Sale, Separation of family, Murder, and Rape of PEOPLE; ~Segregation Legal mistreatment, under education, under employment, unfair hiring practices, unjust incarceration etc…; ~CIA putting drugs in the community, illegal wire tapes of civil
wow - someone is upset......
And maybe you have reason to be. But don't use labels on others like "Tee Baggers" and make adverse general accusations/statements about selected segments of the population based on their socio-demographic background, like you just did. You might find that some would view this as hypocritical.....
lets get this right!!!!!
This is not about race, or family or school and what nice people they were. It's about how STUPID they are. Plain and simple. STUPID!!!!!. Now unfortunately they dont' have to remain in prision for life or be executed for their stupidity. But maybe by being stupid, so other inmate will take care of that situation because he doesn't think they are such nice people.
Come on
You ALL know the words.....Let's sing along.....
Na na na na........Na na na na........Hey hey hey.......
* * * * GOODBYE * * * *
Sentences
If we had a hard-core, justice-loving judge they will get life....this they deserve. A liberal judge will sentence them and parole them very, very soon so they can do it again.....An injection will cure both these thugs and killers problems. It will cure your's and mine....also!
definitions
I'm not sure we're working on the same definition of "justice" here. e.g. fair to all parties as dictated by reason and conscience
