VIRGINIA BEACH
"U-Turn Mike" would like this motorcade.
On Tuesday afternoon, about 100 bikers followed the casket of Michael Lee Ullrich as it made its way on Virginia Beach Boulevard from Hollomon-Brown Lynnhaven Chapel to the funeral home's chapel on Tidewater Drive.
The avid biker and mechanic at Southside Harley-Davidson in Virginia Beach died March 9 at his home. He was 59.
Ullrich's body was transported in a motorcycle hearse that came from Delaware.
He rode his bike to work every day the weather allowed, said Megan Claffey of Virginia Beach, the wife of Ullrich's stepson, Michael.
"This is exactly what he would have wanted," she said.
Ullrich spent 20 years in the Navy. A motorcade will make its way April 1 to Arlington National Cemetery, where he will be permanently laid to rest at 11 a.m. The motorcade to Arlington is open to all bikers.

Farewell to Mike
May God bless the family of Mike Ullrich. I remember all the rides and events well. Mike, thank you for your service to our country and for your friendship over the years. Ride safe, friend.

Told my wife more than once when the time comes I want to be taken to the final place in a pick up. Been driving one or another since I was sixteen. The one I have now thinks it’s a sports car.
Rest well, Mr. Ullrich. Thank you for your service, sir. May you ride free and proud in the hereafter. Loud pipes, no helmet.
Papa Mike
Dylan and Megan will miss their Papa Mike greatly. Glad to see how loved Mike was by his family and friends! Our thoughts and prayers are with Grandma Cookie, Uncle Richard & Aunt Robin and the kids, Daddy(Steve) and the rest of the family.
Happy Trails.
Happy Trails.
Great Ride
I was a great ride. The will have a motorcade on April 1st to take him to Arlington National Cemetery. All bikers are invited to join.
It was an honor to ride...
I was a rider among many in the group. A friend of some of the family and got to meet Mike a few times at the dealership, and HOG chapter member. Of all the rides I have ever been on, this one will stay forever in my thoughts. It was truly an honor to ride with Mike on his last ride. Thoughts and prayers to the family and friends.
Honor our vets!
There are never enough ways to honor our vets. My thanks for your service.
We will meet again
Thank you for what you had did for our country and this is a fine farewell to a good friend. I remember the stories my husband would tell of the days events that took place while you both served together, and then later one when he decided to become an active motorcycle ride.
Farewell my friend and we will see each other again one day
Way to go
to all who gave this man a fitting send off. Heres to smooth seas and the wind in your face on the journeys next leg.
R.I.P.
I got to witness this as a passerby! Gave me chills!
Thank you for your service and may you R.I.P.
