One man was killed and an officer injured after members of the Police Department's High Impact Patrol attempted to stop a vehicle Wednesday night in the 400 block of Manor Road.
The man who died was identified as Antonio Johnson, 34, of Norfolk. The Medical Examiner’s office has ruled his death a suicide, Newport News police said Thursday afternoon. He died of a single gunshot wound.
Police were trying to find a second man who was originally in the vehicle with Johnson. He was identified as Dwayne Anthony Scott, 32, of Newport News.
It was about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday when three officers approached a vehicle at Woodview apartments and two occupants got out of the vehicle. As the driver, Johnson, fired shots at the officers, the second man, Scott, was seen running from the area, a police news release said. One of the officers was struck in his protective vest and in one of his legs.
The two uninjured officers returned fire and the driver got back into his car and drove off, heading north on Warwick Boulevard, police said.
One officer stayed with the injured officer and the third pursued the shooter, the news release said. During the pursuit, however, the shooter’s vehicle left the road in the 15900 block of Warwick Blvd., and crashed into a stand of trees. Johnson was found dead in the vehicle, a hand gun lying near him, police said.
The injured officer was taken to a hospital, treated and released.
Scott is facing a charge in connection with the shooting incident, but police also want to question him as a witness, a news release said. He is described as being 5 feet 10, 180 pounds and his last known address was in the 300 block of Misty Creek Court in Newport News.
All three officers are on administrative leave, according to the department's policy, until the investigation is completed, police said. The incident will be investigated by the Major Crimes section and by the Office of Professional Standards, a practice followed in all officer-involved shooting cases.
