We welcome your opinion on public issues, in either of two ways. You can submit a letter to the editor for possible publication in the printed edition. The Virginian-Pilot welcomes letters to the editor on all topics, although concise letters (150 words or less) on public issues will receive priority. Letters may be edited for length, style and clarity and writers are limited to one published letter every month. Please add your name, city, street address and daytime telephone number for confirmation.

The other way is to comment on the published letters in this blog. In this online forum, you can comment as much as you want by using the comment box at the end of each entry.

No place for Nye

Congratulations to Rep. Bobby Scott for voting for health reform. That is the kind of Democrat and public official we need: compassionate and visionary. What we don't need are congressmen in the Democratic Party like Glenn Nye. Haven't we had enough of officials who are on the wrong side of history for fear of losing their seats?

Me, too!

I am a conservative and Scott Rigell is my neighbor. But I just switched my vote for November to Glenn Nye, who listens to his constituents (isn't that his job???).

Nye

Dr. Berube - you should be giving thanks to Nye for voting NO. The Health Care Plan calls for deleting $500 million from Medicare that people your and my age need. Nye actually voted to help or improve your and my situation. Just because he is Democrat doesn't mean he can not think and, then, do what is best for his district. I am a die-hard Republican, but I will vote for Nye next November. He does not feel he must cater to Democratic Party lines.

Honesty

Nye stated that he voted no to protect Tricare, even though he knew the day before that tricare was safe. If he cannot represent the democrats who voted him in, he should be honest with us and declare himself independent.

By the way . . .

He wasn't elected to "represent Democrats" either. The whole district!!!!

Not true . . .

Even CAPT Ike Puzon, our Tricare lobbyist on Capitol Hill, didn't know the day before that Tricare was safe. He urged a "call in" and the provision was added.

His title is "Representative" not "Commisar"

His vote was clearly in line with the overwhelming majority of his district. He is their representative, not a party official sent to oversee the citizens and dictate what is best for them.

He will almost certainly lose his seat, the GOP competition he faces is amazingly strong, but he will at least be able to leave with honor.

Look at the overall Virginia vote.

Virginia has 11 members in the House of Representatives.

There are 6 Democrats and 5 Republicans.

There were 7 NO votes and 4 YES votes for the health care bill.

Rep. Rick Boucher (D) of the 9th District also voted NO.
