NORFOLK

The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve plans to help subsidize the proposed Midtown Office Building.

The city agreed to lease 60,000 square feet in the proposed office building for its Human Services Department. In return, developer Tivest Holdings LLC will pay $1.2 million to purchase 4.5 acres of land from the city.

Previously, the city agreed to give the site, at Tidewater Drive and Virginia Beach Boulevard, to the developer.

The building will be the new home for the Southeastern Tidewater Opportunity Project, an anti-poverty agency that will lease 100,000 square feet.

The city agreed to a 12-year lease that will cost the city $5.2 million more than it currently pays for office space. Mayor Paul Fraim said it was worth the additional cost to bring investment and jobs to the area.
