Nye donates $14,000 from disgraced N.Y. legislator

U.S. Rep. Glenn Nye has given a Virginia Beach group $14,000 in campaign donations that he received two years ago from U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel, a New York legislator recently accused of violating House ethics rules.

Nye, a Democrat representing the 2nd Congressional District,, donated the money on Wednesday to Vetshouse Inc., a non profit group that assists homeless military veterans, said his spokesman, Clark Pettig, on Friday.

Rangel resigned Wednesday as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee after an ethics panel accused him of accepting Caribbean trips from a corporation in violation of House rules.

Nye decided to donate the money after the ethics panel issued its preliminary report, Pettig said.

Federal campaign records show Rangel's political action committee also donated $10,000 to the election campaign of U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va.

Rangel gave the funds in June 2008 during Nye's campaign to unseat U.S. Rep. Thelma Drake, a Republican, in the 2nd Congressional District. The district includes Virginia Beach, the Eastern Shore and parts of Norfolk and Hampton.

Scott Rigell, a Beach businessman seeking the GOP nod to run against Nye, issued a statement Friday urging Nye to return the funds. His statement was made before Nye's office announced that Nye had given the money to Vetshouse two days earlier.

nye is clever

He lives in VA Beach which is full of republicans, hence he votes the way he does to get some of those republican votes in the re-election. Pretty smart move, but he won't get my vote again, nor that of many others that originally supported him. The only way he will get re-elected will be the republican vote.....Good Luck with that!

Did The Right Thing

Glenn Nye did the right thing. How about giving the guy some credit?! Instead of picking him apart about his timing. Look, Charlie Rangel deserves what he gets if he is guilty of ethics violations. But lets not forget that he was a Vietnam War Vet, who served a large New York City constituency for decades. He doesn't deserve a pass, but he did deserve to have the facts borne out. That is all Glenn Nye has done. And once they were, he did what was the correct thing to do, donated those moneys to a good cause.

But to some, I guess no good deed goes unpunished.

agreement

finally, something both parties can agree on. Nye is equally despised by Republicans and Democrats.Opportunites for republicans: nominate a non bible republican who can be as fiscally conservative as he likes, but avoids social conservatism because no dem will vote to end their own civil rights.Opportunites for the democrats: Folks, we have a loser here with Nye. Draft Phil Kellam, who knows how to manage a budget (commissioner of the revenue for Virgina Beach) provided he leaves the religious dogma in the church where it belongs.Read between the lines. If republicans continue with the likes of Ken Cuccinelli, who is denying equal rights for gay and lesbians they will not get the benefit of the gay vote. It's just that plain and simple. Perhaps republicans feel they can get elected without the gay vote. maybe so, but consider how much additional money will have to be spent for the campaign. Ken Cuccinelli is a liability for the Commonwealth. First they came for my neighbors, but I wasn't like my neighbors, so I said nothing....Then they came for me, and there was no one left to help. Couldn't fit the whole quote. Sorry.

The "first they came for my neighbors" quote doesn't fit

Your quote implies that someone is trying to enact legislation to harm a group of people, vice what the current situation really is: Someone blocking proposals to grant some sort of new protection that didn't exist before. Your quote refers to a situation where the Govt. is pro-active in changing a groups status for the worse. The current situation is different - you have a politician reacting to a proposed change in policy that would promote a particular groups rights. The question I have is, is there really provable instances where state pay or promotions have been adversely affected because of sexual orientation? If so, I can't seem to find them discussed in the paper anywhere....

And what did

Warner do with his $$ from Rangel?

contributions

Looking for a ''RAT'' - DON'T FOLLOW THE BREADCRUMBS , FOLLOW THE MONEY .

boomerang

I actually feel sorry for Congressman Nye, who seems to be a decent fellow. His leadership- a clueless President, delusional Speaker, corrupt and incompetent committee chairman, partisan to the core- have overridden those who would choose a more moderate and less divisive path. Too bad he wasn't part of a Democratic group who joined with Republicans to place a more rational Democratic Speaker of the House instead of the complets disatster Pelosi.

send it to the Treasury

All the campaign "war chests" that politicians have are allowed to be kept. Although they cannot use the money for PERSONAL use, they can use the money raised to run for another office. Soon to be former senator Bayh has millions in his campaign chest and can use that to run for president.
How about a campaign finance reform law - any money not spent during that campaign cycle is sent to the Treasury; no donations from the Internet until a valid US address is obtained; money can't be given from one politician's campaign funds to another, only to the party; millionaires (and billionaires) running for office can't donate anymore than all of us (not combined); no personal loans to the campaign.

Congressman Nye - help Virginia Treasury or the US Treasury by returning the money from the others of the NEW "culture of corruption" to the Treasury.
