SURRY
Old Dominion Electric Cooperative's proposed $6 billion coal-fired power plant might be an economic boon for Surry County.
But Isle of Wight County officials fear it could stifle economic development and tourism throughout the region.
The county already is trying to attract new industry to two large industrial properties and the region is months away from losing its air quality attainment status.
Isle of Wight Supervisor Stan Clark argues the last thing it needs is "a huge polluter" like a 1,500-megawatt coal-fired plant.
Though the Surry County Board of Supervisors and Dendron Town Council have approved land-use ordinances for the plant, Old Dominion still must secure more than 50 environmental permits before the project can move forward.

Environmentalist and NIMBY taxes
We can put a man on the Moon but some claim that we can't have clean coal here in the USA. America has been blessed with lots of oil and coal that we cannot use since it contains sulphur. So, the NIMBY and environmentalist try to shutdown any use of coal or oil and their actions cause ever increasing electric bills and gasoline and heating costs. How about concentrating on the fact that the coal and oil contains sulphur and focus on that instead of just saying NO!
There is no longer any excuses that the environmentalist or NIMBY can give to absolve them of our dependence on foreign oil and coal. Do you really think that the coal power plant operators and owners don't want clean air and water?
The point is REDUCING our dependence of foreign oil - even smokers are weaned off.
Could stifle physiologic
Could stifle physiologic developement would be a more to the point assessment.
Choose Coal or Water or choose Wind and Water
Richmond, VA – The House and Senate have voted final unanimous passage of legislation that would promote the offshore wind industry in Virginia. SB 577 sponsored by Senators McEachin and Wagner, and HB 389 sponsored by Delegate Janis, create the Virginia Offshore Wind Development Authority, an entity of the state that would help promote the development of the offshore wind industry in Virginia.
“We see this as a way for Virginia to say it’s serious about the offshore wind industry. It really sends a message,” said Mary Doswell, Senior Vice President of Alternative Energy Solutions for Dominion.
I'd be proud to live in a state leading in wind energy and getting current with the economic future. Ocean acidification from CO2 has already killed many coral reefs and is corrupting the rehab work in the Chesapeake estuary. What is Virginia without usable waterways?

plant will destroy QOL in Isle of Wight
Better late than never that folks in Isle of Wight start thinking about how life will be downwind from this monstrosity. Living in a mercury fallout plume is not my idea of bucolic bliss.

Ever enjoyed fishing for your supper in a creek or farm pond? Live near Smithfield? Better say goodbye to that simple pleasure. And ignore any silly thoughts about energy conservation, or increased efficiency. The power company needs its profits!
Flattened and destroyed mountains in Appalachia; poisonous waterways everywhere else. That's the Coal Electric vision of our future.
stifle growth ?
Last time I checked, growth requires an abundant and reliable source of
energy and utilities.
Stifle Growth
Coal definitely will not be abundant nor reliable in years to come. I'm just glad that the House and Senate have voted to pass
legislation that would promote the offshore wind industry in Virginia. Wind and renewable energy are some of the things that will, until we no longer exist, prove to be abundant and reliable....
