The hate picketers did not show. But the peace demonstrators did.
More than 250 people - Jewish, Baptist, pagan - showed up at Temple Israel on Monday evening for a planned peaceful walk past picketers from Westboro Baptist Church of Kansas and into the synagogue.
But the picketers, who are known for their anti-gay, anti-military and anti-Semitic rhetoric, were a no-show.
Rabbi Michael Panitz was more pleased with the diversity of the turnout. He estimated that only about 75 were from his congregation, and the rest were supporters from as far as Williamsburg.
"They wanted to stand with people who are under the attack of bigotry," Panitz said. "I was very heartened to see it."
The Kansas group listed recently on its Web site that it would demonstrate at local sites through Wednesday, including at the funeral of a 19-year-old Chesapeake Marine killed two weeks ago in Afghanistan. Westboro Baptist Church is listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Four church members, including a child, appeared near Maury and Granby high schools earlier Monday, but they were quickly outnumbered. Crowds of more than 150 at both sites waved gay pride flags, chanted "Virginia is for Lovers" and touted posters declaring "Diversity is Beautiful" and "Elton John is my Homeboy."
A more subdued crowd gathered behind Temple Israel before 5, and Panitz led them into the sanctuary. Before beginning the daily services, he pointed to a row of stained-glass windows.
One told the story of Isaiah and showed a man hammering swords into plowshares, ending war. Another frame depicted train tracks leading to an archway - the death chambers of the Holocaust.
The last told the story of the day when all men will transcend their differences, Panitz said, and live in peace.

What
What are they smoking in Kansas cause these people have lost their freaking minds!
They are trolls. Bible heads
They are trolls. Bible heads send them lots of money to do this. Kind of like PETA, only a different angle. It's the same way Pat Robertson got his riches, Westboro Baptist church is just a bit more over the top.
WWJCD?
Westboro Baptist Church of Kansas--spreading the word of Christ one protest at a time: HATE. No, uh, wait, that's not right...
There's Hope Yet
For the residents of this area. Twice as many people showed up to protest these homophobic, racist bigots than showed up at the Tea Party rally. Hope springs eternal.
speaking of tea parties
It would not surprise me to find that some belong to both groups.
Hardly
All that shows is people jump to attention at PR stunts by some media hungry hate group rather than care about not allowing the government to take away more of our money and rights. I call it sad that people don't realize who can actually damage their freedom.
Damage to freedom?
You don't think that these lunatics who protest the funerals of our fallen war heroes because abortions are legal in this country damage our freedom? And that it's "sad" that these counterprotestors stood up to their hatred and bigotry?
Picketing again
The morons were picketing in front of Landstown High School this morning.
no such thing as bad press
They got all the media coverage they wanted and more without even having to show up.
Donations increase to anti hate groups.
Thanks for the publicity Westboro Baptist Church.
