Port authority outdoes boss on bonus

Posted to: Business Ports and Rail

Sometimes it pays to be second in command.

Jeff Keever, the Virginia Port Authority's senior deputy executive director, received a larger performance bonus in July than his boss, Jerry A. Bridges, VPA's executive director, according to data released last week.

Keever got $56,609 - or 98 percent of the $57,763 bonus he could have received. His base pay is $231,052. Bridges oversees his compensation.

Bridges received $54,287 - or about 60 percent of the $90,480 bonus for which he was eligible. His base pay is $301,600. The VPA's Board of Commissioners oversees Bridges' compensation.

Joe Harris, a Port Authority spokesman, said the bonus plans for Bridges and Keever are structured differently. A factor in Keever's bonus was the inclusion of Craney Island, the site of a planned marine terminal, in the federal budget.

Bridges' incentive pay was keyed to a wider array of benchmarks, Harris said, adding that the recession's effect on the port played a role. "Some of the things were beyond his control, but he still gets penalized for them. "

Harris stressed that the money for the bonuses came from Port Authority revenue, not from state funds.

bonas

What do we tell all the persons that were layed off and had there pay frozen and not spending any money on repairs to terminals. This is goverment at its best

Port authority

What contributions , above and beyound , did these gentlemen contribute?
Was there any ''value added'' to the port authority by having these men as employees ? Was there a significant spike upward in revenue when comparing this years revenue with last years ?If these questions are answered in the positive , they deserve a bonus -- if not ,no.

what part of that excuse is not double speak

The Virginia Port Authority

"The Virginia Port Authority is an agency of the Commonwealth of Virginia, reporting to the Secretary of Transportation. It is the state's leading agency for international transportation and maritime commerce, charged with operating and marketing the marine terminal facilities through which the shipping trade takes place."

How can it not be from state money when the state owns the ports and the Port Authority is a state agency.

This is just disgusting.

This madness has to stop.

“Harris stressed that the money for the bonuses came from Port Authority revenue, not from state funds”

This madness has to stop. Port Authority revenue minus expenses produces profit. This profit should not be used to fund these ridiculous bonuses. The profit should be used to balance the budget. These two are extremely overpaid.

Bonus for what?

It's amazing how these people get raises just for doing their job, I was alway told you have to go above and beyond the scope of your job to get a raise, I guess this is great when you get to write in the amount you want. A governor who gives the PORT 40 million dollar a year, I wish someone give me that amonut of money to run a business, which is VA tax payer money, If everyone thinks these people are doing a great job go down to the ports and look at the long lines of trucks that block the road ways trying to get in to these ports, and the junk equipment that comes out of these ports, If you happen to drive around these containers stay away there is always something going on with them, blown tires, tires coming off, handles coming off, and locking pins. If the PORTS are that good why do all the drivers complaint about the lack of proficiency, look at the truck that are around the ports,it looks like that bonus money should have been given to the people who deserve it. But what can you say they are a non-profit organization

Salary and Bonus

VPA does receive State funding for a portion of its total budget. Therefore it would seem tax dollars are being used; maybe not directly but indirectly.

Bonus 08/04/2009

I am happy for them both, keep up the good work. Hope all their efforts continue to put the Ports of Hampton Roads on the map of global shipping.
Also do not forget the fine people who work @ all of the ports that provide the best service available.Wish I was still there I miss it.

State employee who makes

State employee who makes more than 99% of Virginians gets a bonus of nearly 60k. What a country, what a state, what a bunch of imbeciles running both. So far I have not seen how the wealthy have done anything other than enjoy the ride of this recession.

Tunnel vision

When was the last time you worked for a poor person? The evil "rich" you refer to pay 75% of all taxes in this country, employ people, run businesses, develop property, and spend money. Your tunnel vision clouds the big picture.

The guy was not an employer

The guy was not an employer but an employee. The employer is the State Of Virginia, who by the way I pay with my taxes. If the state earns outside money, it should go to reduce taxes, not pay some already highly paid person a bonus.
