NASCAR Sprint Cup cars circled Talladega Superspeedway at more than 200 mph Tuesday during a test with the new rear spoiler.
Shortly after Denny Hamlin posted a lap of 202.170 mph, NASCAR called the teams in to change the restrictor plate and adjust the spoiler. Speeds returned to the mid-190s.
The one-day session was to test the spoiler, which is replacing the wing, and confirm a gear ratio compatible for the restrictor-plate series officials will mandate.
No decisions were announced on what size restrictor plate and spoilers teams will use when the series races at Talladega next month. NASCAR has not announced when the spoiler will replace the rear wing, although, the change is expected to take place for Martinsville later this month.
"We believe we came away here today with a good starting point and are looking forward to coming back here next month with a great race," said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition.
Hamlin, running in the draft, was 1 of 3 drivers to officially top 200 mph during the afternoon session. Teammate Joey Logano ran a lap, according to NASCAR, at 201.863 mph. Brian Vickers went 200.163 mph. David Reutimann was fourth at 199.879 mph.
Most of the 25 teams spent the morning doing single-car runs. Jeff Gordon was among a few who drafted before lunch. Teammate Jimmie Johnson was in that group and posted the fastest lap of the session at 196.467 mph. Gordon was next at 196.310 mph.
Gordon said the car didn't drive much differently in the draft.
"The cars have a little bit more turbulent air when you're behind other cars," he said. "Makes the car rattle and shake a little bit more, which I heard was similar to what the Nationwide cars have. So no big surprise there."
IT'S A BOY
Jeff Gordon announced Tuesday that his wife, Ingrid, is due to have a boy. The couple's second child is due this summer. The couple have a daughter, Ella, who was born in June 2007. '
DRIVER CHANGES
David Stremme is listed as the driver of the No. 26 car this weekend at Bristol in place of Boris Said. Also, Michael Waltrip is listed in the No. 55 car in place of Michael McDowell.
PIT STOPS
Cup drivers again will be introduced before Sunday's race at Bristol with music they select. Jeff Burton will be introduced to the tune of "Welcome to the Jungle" by Guns N' Roses. Teammate Clint Bowyer chose "Burning Love" by Elvis and Kevin Harvick selected "Rollin' (Air Raid Vehicle)" by Limp Bizkit.
