Hunter Buchanan's two hits and three RBIs sparked the victors. David Ellis opened the scoring in the 10th minute and added another goal in the second half as the top-ranked Falcons blanked the No. 2 Hawks on Thursday.
Hunter Byrnes and Drew Hartell each added a goal for the victors, who led 1-0 at halftime.
"We held the ball well - it was a solid performance by the defense," said Falcons coach Scott Mead, adding that two regulars at the back - Chris Albiston and Brent Preti - were unavailable due to illness. "Zac Eckert started at outside back, played well and recorded an assist."
Keeper Dylan Gingrich helped secure the shutout over the Hawks with two saves.
"It's always good for us to play the best out-of-district team - Hickory was a state semifinalist last year," said Mead, whose team improved to 4-0 with wins over Blackburg, the defending Group AA champion, and Patrick Henry, an '09 Group AAA state quarterfinalist. "The path to the state tournament runs through districts and regionals and we want to play the best competition."
Cox will next play at Mills Godwin at 7 p.m. Wednesday in a rematch of last year's state final.
