It's just the Virginia Beach Amphitheater these days. Not Verizon Wireless. Not GTE.
The concert venue is without a corporate name for the first time since it opened in 1996.
Turns out, finding a company with a lot of dollars to spare in this economy, even for the chance to expose its brand to all kinds of music fans, is tough.
"Everyone is cutting back, and the first thing they'll cut back is marketing and advertising," said Mark Wawner, with the city's development authority.
Verizon Wireless was the title sponsor through 2007, although the amphitheater continued to promote the cellular company in its name until the end of last year. When the amphitheater first opened, GTE, which later became part of Verizon Communications, bought the naming rights.
Verizon Wireless decided to pull all its name and title sponsorships two years ago, said Melanie Ortel, a spokeswoman for the company. The decision was not related to the economy, she said. And the company is still negotiating other sponsorship deals with the amphitheater, she said.
"We're committed to the community," Ortel said.
In its arrangement with Live Nation, which operates the amphitheater, the city gets 5 percent of all sponsorships. In 2009, the city received $53,000, Wawner said.
The city spent $10.75 million to help construct the $17.75 million venue.
The city has collected $16 million in taxes and other fees from the amphitheater since 1996, Wawner said, although recent revenue is slightly down.
The amphitheater isn't alone in losing its sponsorship. The PGA Tour, for example, has lost several benefactors for its events, including General Motors.
"It's just a fact of the economy," Wawner said. "Hopefully, it will improve."

Money Complaints
Sadly all of you complaining about what it costs to go to a concert at the Amp would likely complain at any venue. If you've ever been to any Concert hall - such as in D.C. it's not any cheaper. It's the cost of enjoying such an event. Anybody gone to a concert, the circus, or an amusement park and walked out thinking "Man that was CHEAP!!" I would bet not. If you don't like what it costs to see a big ticket act - then don't pay the entry fee. I'll agree that the price of a soda or a hamburger is a bit much but that's usually the case at any of those type places. Any theme park etc. is the same story. As for me - I enjoy seeing my favorite singers every year and it's my summer entertainment - I'll keep going if and when I can. (And I'll be standing up for those who want to complain about that too :) )
Please Sit Down!!!
I attended the David Cook concert at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront last summer, but didn't see much of him. Although we had good seats, the crowd stood up the whole concert (except for me). It would have been futile for me to stand anyway, because the kid in front of me was standing in its seat, encouraged by its daddy.
A person would be frowned upon if they stood during a theatrical production or the symphony. Maybe people should start doing that so a law is passed prohibiting it everywhere.
I will not attend another concert unless I know people will stay seated. Rod Stewart asked people not to stand at the beginning of his concert, and I really appreciated that. I would go to a concert of his again.
A concert!
While I would be ticked off about someone standing in a seat (that's a bit much) it's a concert - not church! Get over it! People stand up - and sing along - and scream. If you don't appreciate the good time of a live performance then you probably should stay home - you're a downer for the rest of us (standing up)
It took 6-7 years ...
...spending big bucks for the shows and the snacks/drinks etc. That though I could live with begrudgingly but - why does a parking fee get added to every ticket. Whether there is one in a car or 7 in the van, each person pays for parking. What a rip off. To top it off, they have never done anything to improve the parking - the same old dirt and gravel Pooh since day one. Oh - unless of course you pay for the VIP parking....
money maker?
The real question is...Has the amphitheater gotten out of the red yet? Is the money coming in more than the debt owed on the construction?
out of the "red"
At $12 a beer I would assume they are well out of the debt of building that place! LOL
VA Amphitheater is Horrible
I live in NC and got tickets to a show at the Virginia Beach Amphitheater. It was horrible. They discourge you from tailgating and have no porto-johns. For performers like Kenny Chesney and Jimmy Buffet part of the fun is tailgating. We will take our money to Nissan Pavilion or Walnut Creek from now on.
Charlotte
The Amphitheater in Charlotte and others still hold the Verizon name. A google search revealed no stories of them ending their sponsorship at the other places. Some of them are also managed by Live Nation.
I love the Concets
You all can complain but I love to attend the shows several times each year. Yes it costs a lot for a beer but watching the numbers of drunks in there, the cost doesn't seem to be an issue. Frankly if you only go a few times a year the cost seems worth it. I'm sad to see the city asking for a $150,000n each year for the next six years to repair the place but what is new...
See you at the show!
$12 beer anyone?
