Virginia ranks 7th in GPS navigation usage

Posted to: News Virginia

Virginia residents rank No. 7 in the nation among the most frequent users of GPS navigation, according to new research.

And what do GPS users search for most often? Walmart.

Virginia is among several mid-Atlantic states that posted the highest GPS usage. Maryland was first, using the technology twice as much as the national average. Washington, D.C., and North Carolina are also in the top five. TeleNav, one of the largest navigation services providers, released an analysis of usage data Wednesday.

Los Angeles drivers used GPS navigation to reroute around traffic more than any other city. Washington, New York, Chicago and Atlanta rounded out the top five.

Residents of Phoenix may be the most cost-conscious drivers, searching for gas based on price more than any other city. Other budget-conscious drivers were in San Antonio, Cleveland, Detroit and Jacksonville, Fla.

Walmart topped the list as the No. 1 business searched. Starbucks took a close second, followed by Target, Best Buy and Bank of America. The top category of food searched is pizza, followed by Chinese, hamburgers, American and Mexican.

Why fixate on cars

Why are they fixating on cars? You need your GPS on your boat a lot more than you need it in a car. Your car stays in sight of land.

true...

no doubt cars do stay within site of land but Lordy have you seen the way some people are driving those cars? I seriously question whether their BRAINS are within site of land!

we're 7th in the nation????

using GPS??? Really???? Probably because most drivers, especially here in Hampton roads, couldn't find the north end of a south bound mule without one.

Not really

All that is telling you is where Telenav is most popular which has mostly to do with where they concentrate their marketing. Releasing some trivia and calling it a study is actually one of the "free publicity" gimmicks you learn about in marketing classes. News web sites can't resist it.

GPS users

Ugh, big freaking whoop deee doooo. What a worthless article, IMHO.

not illegal

GPS is not illegal. It is illegal to have it or anything else attached to your windshield. Code section 46.2-1054 -If you get your car inspected and the inspector follows the law, he will not pass your car with something attached to the windshield not factory installed.
Here's the only law on GPS- 46.2-1078.1. Use of handheld personal communications devices in certain motor vehicles; It shall be unlawful for any person to operate a moving motor vehicle on the highways while using any handheld personal communications device to:Manually enter multiple letters or text in the device as a means of communicating with another person;(in other words - a phone)
The provisions of this section shall NOT apply to The use of factory-installed or aftermarket global positioning systems (GPS) or wireless communications devices used to transmit or receive data as part of a digital dispatch system

RE: not illegal

I’ve been told that nothing “extra” can be in the driver’s line of sight. That’s why tickets can be given to folks with things hanging down from their rear view mirror. Guess I’ve been told incorrectly by State and local police.

"Ranks 7th in GPS"

Funny, every police officer I ever talked to about them says that a GPS in illegal in Virginia, if it’s in view of the driver.

Huh? Read paragraph B2 and the words following aftermarket

§ 46.2-1078.1. Use of handheld personal communications devices in certain motor vehicles; exceptions; penalty.

A. It shall be unlawful for any person to operate a moving motor vehicle on the highways in the Commonwealth while using any handheld personal communications device to:

1. Manually enter multiple letters or text in the device as a means of communicating with another person; or

2. Read any email or text message transmitted to the device or stored within the device, provided that this prohibition shall not apply to any name or number stored in the device nor to any caller identification information.

B. The provisions of this section shall not apply to:

1. The operator of any emergency vehicle;

2. An operator who is lawfully parked or stopped;

3. The use of factory-installed or aftermarket global positioning systems (GPS) or wireless communications devices used to transmit or receive data as part of a digital dispatch system; or

yeah and you don't have to take any field sobriety tests, either

Don't be fooled. You are not required by law to submit to any walk-the-line or say-your-ABCs-backward or touch-your-nose type field sobriety testing. That's law-enforcement scare tactics. Remember to ask the officer beforehand so it is on record when you refuse. You are required, however, to submit to a breathalyzer test.
