Bond revoked for Beach man accused of hit-and-run

VIRGINIA BEACH

A Circuit Court judge revoked bond Tuesday for a man accused of striking an elderly woman while driving drunk on Dec. 30.

Circuit Judge Stephen C. Mahan ordered that Dorek Emanuel Hayes, 29, remain in custody pending the outcome of his trial. The order came after Hayes' pretrial officer reported that he’d tested positive for drinking alcohol four times in the past three months in violation of his bond conditions. He was taken back into custody on April 17, according to jail records.

On Dec. 30, police arrested Hayes and charged him with drunken driving twice within a five-year period, maiming, refusing to take a blood or breath test, and hit-and-run with injuries. He’s accused of striking 73-year-old Mary Edwards that Wednesday evening as she walked home from Haygood Shopping Center. Police arrested him about a block away from the scene after he crashed into a parked van.

Edwards was severely injured and is still recovering in a rehab center. She cannot walk or open her left hand and still requires a feeding tube.

Hayes was released on $7,500 bond on Jan. 6 under several conditions, including that he adhere to a 10 p.m. curfew, seek employment and refrain from drinking alcohol. But according to a form filed by his pretrial officer last week, he failed an alcohol screen on Jan. 12, six days after his release from jail, and again on Feb. 15, March 8 and April 14.

Tuesday, Senior Commonwealth’s Attorney S. Catherine Dodson, the prosecutor in Hayes’ case, requested that his bond be revoked. He will remain jailed until his trial, which is scheduled for June 14.
