Executive director of 'Lost Colony' resigns

Less than a month from opening night of the 73rd season of "The Lost Colony, " the show's executive director/producer Carl Curnutte has said it will be his final season with the show.

Curnutte confirmed today that he had resigned but refrained from further comment.

Christopher L. Sewell, Chairman of the Roanoke Island Historical Association, the production's producer, said in a letter that Curnutte's resignation is effective October 20.

The production, which tells the tale of the Roanoke colonists who disappeared after 1587, is billed as the longest-running outdoor symphonic drama in the nation.

A costume designer by trade, Curnutte has been connected to the show for 21 years. He first served as general manager in 2004, and by 2006 had taken his current title.

Curnutte has provided "exemplary and passionate leadership" Sewell said, most notably in recovery from the fire that destroyed the costume shop.

"The Lost Colony will miss his enthusiasm and dedication to our organization and our supporters," he wrote.

The 2010 season of "The Lost Colony" opens on May 28 at Waterside Theatre, located in Fort Raleigh National Historic Site.
