The Coast Guard is warning boaters to be cautious near the Vinings Landing Marina, where cleanup efforts continue after a fire early Wednesday.
Boaters should obey the no-wake zone so as not to hamper those efforts, the Coast Guard stated in a news release.
Three boats sank and three were damaged during the two-alarm blaze at the marina on Shore Drive.
IMS Environmental and Moran Environmental Recovery were hired to recover the sunken vessels and to manage the cleanup.
Most of the spilled fuel has dissipated or has been absorbed by booms, the release said. A hard boom remains in place to keep debris from spreading.
The fire, reported around 1 a.m., also damaged a floating dock, but no one was injured, said Norfolk Fire-Rescue spokesman Battalion Chief Harry Worley.
The fire was under control by 2:50 a.m., Worley said. Norfolk firefighters were assisted by Virginia Beach and the Coast Guard.
Fire investigators believe the blaze began on one of the boats that was destroyed, Worley said. The boats will be examined after they are pulled out of the water.
No damage estimate was available.
