JAMES CITY COUNTY
A 27-year-old county firefighter died when his motorcycle crashed into a guardrail Sunday night at Va. 199 and Monticello Avenue, police said.
Christopher D. Karban was headed west on Va. 199 about 10:20 p.m. Sunday when the motorcycle went off the road and crashed at the Monticello overpass, said Major Steve Rubino, police spokesman. Karban, who lived in the county, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators believe speed was a factor, Rubino said.
The crash remains under investigation.
Karban had worked as a firefighter for James City County since October 2005, according to a news release from District Chief Bob Ryalls. He completed his initial firefighter training in spring 2006. In addition to his regular shift assignments, he served on the department's recruitment and retention team, was the department's internal webmaster and official photographer.
He graduated from Bowling Green State University in 2004 with a degree in visual communication. He worked as a graphic designer while attending college.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
