Retired officers: School lunches a security threat

WASHINGTON

School lunches have been called many things, but a group of retired military officers is giving them a new label: national security threat.

That's not a reference to the mystery meat served up in the cafeteria line, either. The retired officers are saying that school lunches have helped make young Americans so fat that fewer of them can meet the military's physical fitness standards, and recruitment is in jeopardy.

A new report being released today says more than 9 million young adults, or 27 percent of all Americans ages 17 to 24, are too overweight to join the military. Now, the officers are advocating for passage of a wide-ranging nutrition bill that aims to make the nation's school lunches healthier.

The officers' group, Mission: Readiness, was appearing on Capitol Hill on Tuesday with U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.

The military group acknowledges that other things keep young adults out of the armed services, such as a criminal record or the lack of a high school diploma. But weight problems that have worsened over the past 15 years are now the leading medical reason that recruits are rejected.

Although all branches of the military now meet or exceed recruitment goals, retired Navy Rear Adm. James Barnett Jr., a member of the officers group, says the obesity trend could affect that.

"When over a quarter of young adults are too fat to fight, we need to take notice," Barnett said. He noted that national security in the year 2030 is "absolutely dependent" on reversing child obesity rates.

Recruitment isn't the only problem posed by obesity. According to the report, the government spends tens of millions of dollars every year to train replacements for service members discharged because of weight problems.

This isn't the first time the military has gotten involved in the debate over school lunches. During World War II, military leaders had the opposite problem, reporting that many recruits were rejected because of stunted growth and inadequate nutrition. After the war, military leaders pushed Congress to establish the national school lunch program so children would grow up healthier.

The program was established in 1946, "as a measure of national security," according to the original bill language.

Today, the group is urging Congress to eliminate junk food and high-calorie beverages from schools, put more money into the school lunch program, and develop new strategies that help children develop healthier habits.

The school lunch bill, awaiting a Senate vote, would establish healthier options for all foods in schools, including vending machine items. The legislation would spend $4.5 billion more over 10 years for nutrition programs.

The Army is already doing its part to catch the problem earlier, working with high schoolers and interested recruits to lose weight before they are eligible for service, says U.S. Army Recruiting Command's Mark Howell. He added that he had to lose 10 pounds himself before he joined the military.

"This is the future of our Army we are looking at when we talk about these 17- to 24-year-olds," Howell said. "The sad thing is a lot of them want to join but can't."

Next they ought to....

draft R McDonald and his buddy the burger king!! That will end the war on fat, then we can say we won at least 1 war!!

Hopefully this program and

Hopefully this program and Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution can combine forces and really make a change in school lunches. It's been a decade since my last "school lunch" and our options where three lines 1) Nacho Cheese & Chips which sometimes included soft tacos 2) French Fries, Pizza, Cheese Burgers and Chicken Sandwich's 3) Salad and Subs.

66% of the lines served unhealthy processed foods plus we had access to vending machines. Which lines do you think were the busiest?

Could the Pilot acquire the sales from each of these lines and post this as public data? It would be interesting to see what Granby High is eating now days..

School Meals

My child eats a high-quality school lunch every day, which includes a side salad, fruit and low-fat milk and he is not overwieght or obese. I appreciate the school meal program for all that it does to serve healthy meals on a meager budget! Obesity occurs when we eat more calories than we use. American children are obese because many of them are not physically active and their parents don't take the time to cook and serve healthy meals. Go to VB Little League fields on any given day and I assure you that you will see lots of fit, normal weight children. Shame on you lazy parents who are so quick to shirk your parental responsibilities and blame others for your family's health problems!

I'm sure little Timmy eats

I'm sure little Timmy eats his salad everyday with a side of fruit loaded with artificial sweeteners along with the high quality "processed" cheeseburger you speak of. Cafeteria workers make only a small portion of food from scratch simply because it requires additional time and money to make it the old fashion way.

Your example of visiting the baseball field is great because these kids are actively playing a sport. Lets be real, trying going to the park on any given day.. Now do the math and compare in shape to not in shape.

beware!

School lunches should be an option to bringing your own, especially if bringing your own isn't cool. My son elects not to eat. Bringing a luch isn't cool, but if he buys lunch he pays for it later by spending hours ill in the bathroom. This occurs every time he eats at school! Last year he was served frozen french fries; among other rediculous meals. If you are in a late lunch you may only be searved a fraction of the lunch you are charged for because of food shortage; and this happens daily. School lunch is a joke and time is spent better sitting in the library instead of in the middle of a food fight where fully cartons of milk are thrown at high velocity!

Cheese Dump

Its true, school lunch program was used to dump cheese and lots of it on our kids. Before we can have health care, we must have health. Obesity is at eye level in the supermarkets, pop and macaroni bombard us when we should be eating raw potatos, rice, vegetables and fish. School lunches are crippling our future workforce. they are being taught bad taste from a very young age. Our kids are our nations future and they must be taught at a young age how to develop proper taste so that strawberries taste better than mystery pudding.

Lazy youth

Drive thru any neighborhood and see how many teens are out pushing a lawnmower, nope, dad is mowing the grass. How many teens actually get out and exercise, ride a bike ? Or more specific, how many teens will take a paper route where they ride a bike to deliver the daily paper ? As previous readers have stated, we are caught up in the Big Mac era of fast food, no time to cook dinner and spend quality family time and certainly cannot allow our neighbors to think "Our" kids should lower their standards by doing manual chores. Heaven forbid.

Where have you been?

Where have you been? They don't ALLOW kids to have paper routes anymore! Adults now have paper routes that they deliver from their cars. Look at the parents. Most of them are fat too. Kids don't even realize anymore that they're fat! I worked in a recruiting office. We had a teenager come in who was 40 lbs. overweight. She asked for another recruiter because she didn't think she was fat. Ah, ignorance is bliss!!!

Youngsters are out of shape and not physically fit

When I was in the military even in my 40's, I was able to beat most 18-22 year olds in the physical fitness testing.
They live on big macs and pizza and drink too many soft drinks.
This is a good idea to help save the health of young people who get way too many carbs.

I blame...

I blame X-Box and their parents who are too lazy to actually cook something for dinner. Easier to bring home Big Mac's. Also easier to give the kids the video console than to parent.
