Posted to: Education News Suffolk

SUFFOLK
Suffolk students competing in a recycling drive collected nearly 354,000 plastic bags – topping last year’s total of about 278,000 bags.
The collection effort – organized by the city’s litter control coordinator – kicked off in November and ended on Earth Day, April 22. Fourteen public schools participated.
Trex Co. Inc. in Winchester uses the plastic for decking, fencing and railing products. The company is giving a bench made of recycled materials to the elementary and secondary schools that collected the most bags per capita.
For elementary schools, Southwestern earned first place with 79,777 bags collected. Mount Zion came in second and two schools – Florence Bowser and Kilby Shores – tied for third.
For secondary schools, the first-place winner is Turlington Woods with 7,724 bags. John F. Kennedy and King’s Fork Middle came in second and third, respectively.
