Walk A Mile In Her Shoes

| Walk A Mile In Her Shoes - Newport News, VA |
Every year for the past four or five, there has been a Walk A Mile in Her Shoes event in Newport News, and this repeats itself around the country. This year there were approximately 142 such events around the country.
Walk A Mile in Her Shoes events raise two things, money and awareness, in all too prevalent sexual abuse cases. Men, we are supposed to protect women, not bring harm to them. In sexual abuse cases, the harm is physical, emotional and mental. The victims are often scared for life. It takes a coward to attack a woman. It takes a perverted mind to enjoy sexual battery. Men, we need to bring this shameful behavior to a stop. Bringing awareness into the light of day is one way -- bringing up your sons in a way to respect women is another.
Statistically, 1 in 4 college women will be sexually assaulted. That is shameful. Yet, we still do not want to talk about it. Still, we tend to blame the women who are attacked, as if it were somehow their fault that they were attacked. Still we treat the victims with shame, a shame that is grossly misplaced. The shame should be placed on the men who attack them.
The Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event is a fun way to raise awareness on a serious topic. Men wear women's shoes as they walk a mile. In Newport News, that was four times around the fountain at City Center. Each man solicited pledges from family, friends, and co-workers before the walk.
Next year, men, perhaps you will want to look up such an event and participate to help protect women from sexual assault. Are you man enough to do that?

Thank you Archie! It was a fabulous day. We are now over the $10,000 mark! All proceeds support rape crisis services at the Center for Sexual Assault Survivors. Men can make a difference! Thank you to everyone who walked and worked to make this event successful!
OUCH!
In my closet are many shoes I haven't worn for a long time, only keep them because they remind me of a different phase of my life. A mile in high heels...oy vey. I applaud your good intentions.
