Fast facts Ocean Lakes, First Colonial and Cox battled all season before the Dolphins came out with the top seed and an automatic Eastern Region berth. The other bid goes to the team that survives what figures to be a highly competitive tournament. There are plenty of standout arms, led by Ocean Lakes’ Shawn Morimando, First Colonial’s John Bowman and Cox’s Grayson Bailey. There’s plenty of pop throughout, too. Ocean Lakes’ Alex Lambert led the district with five home runs, while Kellam (Ryan Kilmon and Patrick Harrington) and Landstown (Cameron Day and Scott Hurrell) have at least two players with four home runs. Cox’s Zach Bach was among the district leaders in batting average and RBIs.

Quarterfinals at Princess Anne Today – No. 1 seed Ocean Lakes (17-1) vs. No. 8 seed Landstown (7-10), 11 a.m.; No. 4 seed First Colonial (12-7) vs. No. 5 seed Princess Anne (13-7), 1 p.m.; No. 2 seed Kellam (14-3) vs. No. 7 seed Cox (8-10), 3 p.m.; No. 3 seed Kempsville (12-8) vs. No. 6 seed Bayside (8-8), 5 p.m.

Semifinals Tuesday at Princess Anne, 4 and 6 p.m.

Championship Thursday at Princess Anne, 5 p.m.

Fast facts While it’s a good bet the top two seeds, Ocean Lakes and Kellam, will reach the title game, First Colonial, Princess Anne and Bayside loom as prime candidates for a spoiler role. Kellam, the only team to beat Ocean Lakes this season, wants to avenge last year’s 2-1, 11-inning loss to the Dolphins in the Beach District tournament final. The pitchers in that game, Kellam ace Miranda Paul (13-2) and her Ocean Lakes counterpart Liz Riley (12-1), are poised for another showdown. Both teams also boast potent offenses. Ocean Lakes is led by .600-plus hitter and RBI leader Sami Mignat, All-Tidewater veteran Aisha Figueroa and Maicie Hahn. Kellam counters with the bats of Marian Guidry, Janelle Fittro and Melissa Zitt. First Colonial has prospered since the return of pitcher Jailynn Jackson from an injury, while Princess Anne relies on pitcher Taylor Norton and leading hitter Katie MacCall.

STANDOUT ARMS

Of the standout arms at Ocean Lakes, first Colonial and Cox mentioned in this article, I believe Grayson Bailey has far and away the best strikeouts to innings ratio, which many pros believe is the best measure of a good pitcher.

Curious Question...

Why is Kempsville (12-8) a higher seed than PA (13-7)? Is there a typo somewhere?
