A Chesapeake special education teacher is one of eight educators in the state to win a Virginia Lottery Super Teacher Award for 2010.

Deep Creek Central Elementary teacher Meghan Hodgins received a check for $2,000 and a matching credit with a classroom supply company, according to a lottery news release.

Hodgins received the award from lottery Executive Director Paula Otto on Tuesday during a surprise presentation at the school, according to the release.

Hodgins is described as the first teacher in Chesapeake to focus solely on students with autism, the release says. The winning essay that nominated her was written by a colleague.

The panel of five judges included 2009 Super Teacher Award-winner Shannon Knight from Holland Elementary School in Virginia Beach, the release says.
