Chowan County manager hired by Southern Shores, N.C.

SOUTHERN SHORES

Peter Rascoe, current manager of Chowan County, has been hired as manager of the town of Southern Shores in Dare County.

Rascoe succeeds former manager Charles Read, who resigned in February. He is the fifth manager to serve the town since Cay Cross resigned in 1997.

Shortly after Rascoe was appointed Chowan manager in June 2008, it was discovered that the county was nearly broke. Rascoe has said he was not aware of the county's fiscal problems when he took over the job.

Rascoe will start work in Southern Shores on June 9.

Rascoe was doing a good job, considering the mess he inherited. Can't really blame him for accepting a new position. I wish him much success in his new endeavor!

Although I like Peter and think he has done a reasonable job, its time to bring in someone who is not tied to the scandal of the disappearing $18 million. We need someone from outside the area. With the economy like it is, we should be able to get a good person for a REASONABLE salary that is comparable to other counties in the region, NOT the highest in the state like the incompetent Cliff Copeland.
