Thomas Martin,  Wilson softball coach

Coaching resume: Martin, a Navy retiree, waited until his children were grown to begin coaching. He was Wilson's junior varsity softball coach in 2007 and took over varsity the following year.

Education: He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1966 and served until 1986.

Why he became a coach: "I like helping people get better and seeing them develop a sense of accomplishment."

Coaching philosophy:  "Learn the sport, have fun doing it, strive to improve and do whatever the team needs you to do."

Day job: Algebra teacher at Wilson High School.

Early days: He spent most of his early years in the Chicago area, where he watched the Cubs and Ernie Banks, before moving to Texas.

Family tree: Daughter Kelly earned 13 varsity letters at Norfolk Christian in the late 1980s before becoming an Air Force pilot.
