Final chance for comment on N.C. beach driving plan

Posted to: Environment News North Carolina

HATTERAS, N.C.

The deadline has come for public comment on the draft environmental impact statement for the off-road driving plan at Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

Today is the final day for both written and electronic comments to the National Park Service. Electronic comments may be submitted online until midnight Mountain Daylight Time. Written comments must be postmarked no later than May 11. Written comments may be mailed or hand-delivered but cannot be faxed or e-mailed.

Under the proposed ORV plan, vehicles would be allowed year-round access to about 40 percent of the seashore.

The new rules are an attempt to settle a dispute between environmental activists who want to protect seashore animals and outdoor groups who want access to the beach for recreational activities.

Failing to mention

that the 40 % is subject to closure if a bird or turtle sets up camp in the area with no real provision to open other areas to compensate.

Also no mention that areas closed to wildlife are closed PERIOD. You can't go there no matter your mode of transport, such as walking.

1/2 the story

Wouldn't it have been nice if the Pilot bothered to include the email and street addresses to which to comment.
