Immigrant advocates arrested outside White House

Posted to: News

WASHINGTON (AP) — About 35 immigrant advocates, including a nun and a U.S. congressman, were arrested in front of the White House fence Saturday after sitting down and defying orders from police to move.

U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez of Illinois was among those taken away with his hands tied behind his back in plastic restraints.

Many of those arrested Saturday held letters that spelled out the message: "Obama, Stop Deporting our Families."

Gregory Cendana, the 23-year-old president of the United States Student Association, said he was getting arrested for two close friends and his parents, who came to the U.S. on a visa from the Philippines.

Cendana, who said this was his first arrest, took two deep breaths before answering a question about whether he was scared.

"I feel the love and excitement from everybody here today and I'm trying to draw strength from that," Cendana said.

Others wore tee-shirts or held signs saying "We are All Arizona," a nod to the state that recently adopted a tough and controversial new law aimed at curbing illegal immigration.

The new law requires local law enforcement to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they're in the country illegally, which supporters say is necessary because the federal government has failed to secure the borders. Opponents of the measure, including a crowd that filled roughly half of Washington's Lafayette Park, say the measure is discriminatory and will lead to racial profiling.

Some, like Rep. Gutierrez, urged protesters to take something positive from the new law.

"Arizona has unified us," Gutierrez said, crediting the law with bringing focus and energy to the immigration reform movement.

Protesters saved plenty of anger for politicians — President Barack Obama in particular.

Pedro Sanchez, a 37-year-old who is not in the country legally, carried a sign that mentioned Obama's children by name: "Malia, Sasha, what would you feel if someone separated you from your parents?"

Sanchez, a Maryland resident who entered the U.S. on a now-expired visa from Mexico, said he's the only one in his family who is here illegally and he worries that without action from the president, many states will follow Arizona's lead.

"I worry this will be a domino effect," Sanchez said. "You know, once one falls, the others start falling behind it."

Event organizers estimated thousands of protesters turned out to rally at Lafayette Park, urging Obama to fulfill his campaign promises to push for immigration reform.

Kim Propeack of the immigrant advocacy group CASA de Maryland said organizers had distributed 1,000 metro cards to people attending the rally and sent 40 chartered buses from Maryland carrying about 1,800 people. Another nine buses came in from Virginia and others came to Washington on their own.

Obama was to return to the White House around 2:40 p.m. after speaking at the University of Michigan. Two Marine helicopters flew overhead, but it wasn't clear if Obama was on board.

Protesters are usually required to stay in motion when demonstrating so close to the White House, according to U.S. Park Police spokesman Sgt. David Schlosser.

He said all those arrested were being processed Saturday evening at a U.S. Park Police facility, and it was not yet known when they would be released.

Why wasn't Pedro arrested on the spot...?

You're right russ...they not only come from Mexico they come through Mexico to get here. I guess Mexico isn't being much of a friend to us. What the US should do is accumulate all the medical bills of the illegal immigrants who receive medical care in our hospitals/clinics and present that at one nice bill to the Mexican government with 30 day terms. That sounds fair to me. And if they don't pay the bill then we subtract that from any aid they receive from us and then pay the hospitals. That will reduce the operating costs of the hospitals and maybe even make it less expensive for law abiding citizens to receive medical care.

Help with something

What am I missing here ?

I man from central America can go through multiple countries, climb fences, go across rivers, travel 2000 miles across our country with no ID, no knowledge of our language and nothing but the clothes on his back and he can find a job.

Yet I have heard counts as high as 80 % for unemployment in local projects of able bodied persons.

So why are these jobs not filled before the immigrant gets here?

Deportation

Wouldn't it have been a shame if the Indians had deported all those pilgrim illegal immagrants?

freedom or security was asked when the country became

A few years ago the US Supreme Court decided that since campaign financing was a major problem that controlling the free speech of those wanting to donate was more important.

Some Democratic party Congressmen have introduced legislation requiring employees to carry a government issued ID card. Who is going to check those ID cards and will they say "papers"? It is sad that the debate over illegal immigration has become political fear mongering to raise the spectre of Nazi. Shame on those fools saying the friends and neighbors we call police will en masse racially profile people walking down the street to get ice cream. Shame.

The two part solution to illegal immigration is to enforce the employers, including the day labor employers, that hire the illegal immigrants. The second part is to improve the countries of origin to be as the shining city that is America.

Time to Revoke NAFTA

I remember one of the central arguments in favor of the North American Free Trade Agreement, NAFTA, in 1994 was that it would stem the tide of illegal immigration by making industry in Mexico along with Canada more robust and improve wages and reduce the unemployment rate. Since that has not happened and judging by the continuing movement of aliens across the border, there's no benefit in maintaining a NAFTA agreement.Mexican authorities tacitly approve of the illegal border crossings to support their economy and tax the remaining family members in Mexico. I think getting after the illegal aliens results in a very small gain in combating the problem. I would place the focus on the supplier (Mexican government which is corrupt) and the demand (businesses/individuals) who employ them. I would start with deducting foreign aid we send to Mexico for cost of handling Mexican criminals in US jails, then graduate the level of pain with sanctions.

Blame Game

It's the President's fault, it's our fault, it's our economics, it's our drug buyers, it's our scenery. Hey......It's simple, play by the rules or GET OUT NOW and come back the legal way. Stop blaming everything and everyone else.

great opportunity

Here was a great opportunity to deport a few hundred people. We should allow more protests. It would save the police time rounding people up. Go Arizona!

Another thought

I agree with what Gov. Brewer did.....now, wouldn't it be ironic if more and more people left their states where their representatives are too cowardly to do something about illegal immigration and moved to AZ where they are at least trying to make it safe for LEGAL CITIZENS. AZ economy would prosper....and the other states would drop into a hole. Just a thought.

Here's a thought

All of those here in the United States illegally should be forced to live at the White House (while Nobama is there) and with every member of Congress who is too much of a coward to secure the borders and make it safe for the LEGAL Citizens of this country. And I don't mean 'work' for them, I mean LIVE with them at THEIR EXPENSE (Nobama, Congress).

Strip them of citizenship...

Strip them of citizenship and then deport them for good!!
