Gov. Bob McDonnell, the leader of the state’s Republican Party, is publicly taking sides today in the party’s 2nd Congressional District primary by endorsing a longtime friend and campaign contributor, Scott Rigell, over five other GOP contenders.
Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling also is expected to participate in the announcement, scheduled for 4 p.m. in the Norfolk Waterside Marriott Hotel.
The June 8 primary will choose a party nominee to challenge U.S. Rep. Glenn Nye, a Democrat, in the November election. The district includes all of Virginia Beach and the Eastern Shore and parts of Norfolk and Hampton.
The endorsement demonstrates the pull that Rigell has enjoyed in the contest, including support from high-ranking Virginia Republicans such as U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor, the House minority whip, and the largest campaign fund, fueled largely by his own contributions.
Meanwhile , his opponents have criticized him for not being conservative enough for the district.
Phil Cox, the governor’s senior political advise r, said Wednesday that McDonnell’s decision was influenced by his “unique and very close friendship” with Rigell, a first-time candidate for public office and owner of Freedom Automotive.
Predictably, other Republican primary candidates were not happy, with some suggesting McDonnell’s support is an unfair intrusion.
“It’s completely inappropriate to do it,” candidate Ed Maulbeck said. “The Republican Party proved they can’t stay out of the primary. … I don’t appreciate it. The voters don’t appreciate it.”
Shawn Pattison, campaign manager for GOP contender Bert Mizusawa, said: “We’re disappointed to see the governor take sides without evaluating the experience and records of the candidates objectively . This is based on the personal relationship and not the candidates.”
Candidate Scott Taylor said he has “tremendous respect” for McDonnell, but the endorsement before the party vote shows Rigell is weak.
“What other kind of hand holding does he need in a primary?” Taylor said.
The other two Republicans in the primary are Ben Loyola and Jessica Sandlin.
Jason Miyares, Rigell’s campaign manager, said there’s nothing wrong with McDonnell taking sides in a primary.
“I don’t think the governor loses his freedom of speech just because he’s the governor,” Miyares said.
Rigell, who made a personal fortune in auto sales, has been a longtime contributor to Republican campaigns and strongly backed McDonnell’s political rise.
During McDonnell’s successful campaigns for the House of Delegates, attorney general and last year’s gubernatorial election, Rigell, his wife and his businesses contributed a total of $134,000, according to campaign records compiled by the Virginia Public Access Project.
Rigell, who has a significantly larger campaign bank account than his competitors, has been the biggest supporter of his own effort. He had given or loaned his congressional campaign almost $600,000, according to his March 31 federal campaign report.
The McDonnells and Rigells have “been close family friends for over two decades,” Cox said.
McDonnell’s oldest daughter, Jeanine, already has endorsed Rigell, as has the governor’s sister, Maureen McDonnell-Uncapher.
Bob McDonnell also made a brief appearance at Rigell’s formal campaign kickoff in January but did not address the crowd.
Rigell’s campaign paid McDonnell-Uncapher’s firm, Triangle Consultants, $11,500 this year for fundraising services, according to federal campaign filings. McDonnell-Uncapher also donated $500 to Rigell’s campaign.

Rigell China Connection
According to some new info showing up on various blogs, Rigell is a business partner with the Chinese via his Volvo franchise which means that China may have their own representative in Congress. Hillary and the President can use Rigell’s influence and skills as a car salesman and his “China Hot Line” to convince the Chinese not to foreclose on our huge debt. Or maybe he can sell the Chinese Fords to help the trade deficit.
Scott Taylor over Rigell
Rigell and Loyola are like drug dealers who condemn drug-use. Both took stimulus money from our pockets. How can any tea partyer defend them?
RE: Portwork......gread idea
I don't even like Glenn Nye even though I supported him in the last election. Having said that I totally and completely dislike Scott Rigell. The mear fact that he is being endorsed by our new Gov whom I think is a total idiot is reason enough to follow the plan I stated.
Congressional seat
A couple of items come to mind as it pertains to Scott Rigell and the other fine candidates.
First, Scott Rigell donated to then Senator OBama's campaign because in his words, and I quote him "Senator OBama is an eloquent speaker"
Secondly, now Scott Rigell says he donated to the OBama campaign because he did not want Senator Clinton to become our President...each of you be the judge.
That leads us to Governor McDonnell's upcoming endorsement. Folks, we have a list of qualified Republican candidates running for this seat and one Independent now. Before the June 8th Primary all of us should thoroughly review each candidates record, if they ever served in office, their ideas/solutions on how we can change our country and more importantly, their character and leadership they possess. Each candidate has their own website that all of us can visit/review. We should not elect a candidate just because of their name or the amount of money they raised. That is what is currently wrong with our system/Gov't today...it's all about the money and not the individual. Look what has occurred over the years and these Politicians who are supposed to represent us.
Obama Endorses Rigell as 2nd District Candidate
Rigell gets about $500,000 from Cash for Clunkers, and then his campaign finance reports show a half-million available for his campaign. It looks like a huge campaign donation from Obama that was laundered through the C4C program. All with a little "Stimulus" help from Rigell's friends... Webb, Warner, Pelosi, Reid and Obama. And Rigell is the "one" to "stop Pelosi"?
“unique and very close friendship”
If “unique and very close friendship” was a qualification for office, perhaps Obama should have appointed Rev. Wright Secretary of State, or, better yet, Ambassador to Israel!
Another Rigell backdealing
According to Human Events (a conservative web site): Rigell donated $1,000 to the campaign of Barack H. Obama.
Cash for Clunkers?
Obama donor?
What else are we gonna see from this GOP candidate?
Report all the facts, not just the "convienient" ones
He also gave $2000 to McCain and $4600 to Mitt Romney during the same time frame! Pretty simple to figure out, he wanted Obama to beat Clinton hoping the the Presidential race would have been Romney vs. Obama, as I had hoped.
or..
He has no real convictions and was simply trying to hedge his bets. How about a candidate thats a leader. One who put his money on the guy HE believed in and not spreading it around to cover all the bases.
I am conservative and I voted for Nye and so far my vote has proven out in a man that has not towed the San Fransisco liberal line in DC. At least the man stands on his principals.
Most dealerships suffered
Most dealerships suffered from the STUPID "Cash for Clunkers."
They make Much more money from used cars than new cars sales and the government program REQUIRED that *trade-ins* were crushed/destroyed!
Next *cash for appliances"..."cash for caulking"........what in the world is next?
People usually caulk their own windows...this surely created LOTS of jobs! NOT!!!!
