No harm in cutting speed
Re 'City, safety advocates divided over Shore Drive,' front page, May 23: What qualifies Robert Gey, the Beach's top traffic engineer, to pronounce Shore Drive 'phenomenally safe'?
Does he live near it or drive it regularly and at all hours? Has he walked or biked it?
I'm not a traffic engineer. But I am convinced that a posted speed limit of 35 mph would make a life-or-death difference for drunk and sober pedestrians and bicyclists.
If you are going slower in a car, walking or biking you tend to be more aware of your surroundings.
Over the years I've heard that 'guns don't kill people, people kill people.' That makes sense in the same way that 'speed kills.'
A small reduction in the speed limit will not be the end of the world. On the other hand, without a speed reduction, it most likely will be for someone.
