nTelos Wireless Pavilion concert schedule expands to 24 shows

Just when you think the summer concert schedule at nTelos Wireless Pavilion couldn't get any better, the management group pulls another rabbit out of the hat.  They just announced six additional concerts for the season at Harbor Center in Old Town, Portsmouth.

The additions announced to their concert lineup include:

The Go-Go's, (July 14) Willie Nelson (July 23), Slightly Stoopid & Cypress Hill (July 30), Counting Crows (August 7), Billy Idol (September 1) and Angie Stone & Eric Benet (September 18).  New Shows are in red JUST ANNOUNCED.

Make no mistake, there is no magic about this season.  Magic moments don't just happen.  They are created.  The manangement group has worked hard to create a 2010 concert schedule that truly  'offers something for everyone'.   It's all about their Tenth Anniversary Season.  They have announced 24 shows for 2010.  The first concert takes place May 15th.

Michael Franti & Spearhead with special guest The Wailers

Michael Franti & Spearhead is Franti’s newest band. His entire musical career has slowly but surely built an extremely dedicated global grass roots following, earning his fans one concert at a time. As a teenager, Franti’s life was profoundly changed by the music and the message of Bob Marley and the Wailers. Through Franti’s appreciation of Bob Marley, he found bands with a reggae influence like the Police and, especially, The Clash, artists who made socially engaging music alongside more personal songs and still made you dance.

The Wailers along with Bob Marley sold more than 250 million records worldwide. The lineup revolves around Aston “Family Man” Barrett who is widely regarded as one of the world’s greatest bass players and performed on all of those unforgettable performances by Bob Marley & The Wailers from the seventies. U.S. Army Band

Sunday, June 6, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The U.S. Army Band, formed in 1922, is a superb ensemble that has maintained a tradition of excellence as one of the premier musical organizations of The United States Army.

The Band was founded by Army Chief of Staff General John J. "Black Jack" Pershing to emulate European military bands he heard during World War I. The U.S. Army Band proudly plays an important role in events of national and international significance.

The event is part of the The Virginia Arts Festival and is FREE, although a ticket is required through the Festival Box Office or at 757.282.2822.  Tickets will also be available at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion box office.

PHISH

 

Phish kicks off an extensive summer tour on June 11th at Toyota Park in Chicago, IL.  And, just four days later they perform at Portsmouth’s nTelos Wireless Pavilion.  One word describes the announcement!  WOW!

Last year’s summer tour was the band’s first in five years.  This year you have a tremendous opportunity to see them perform right here in Olde Towne Portsmouth.

Earlier this month, Phish performed Genesis’ 'Watcher of the Skies' and 'No Reply at All' at the 25th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.  Guitarist/vocalist Trey Anastasio had the privilege of inducting the group.

After the sold-out summer tour, Phish delved into another ambitious undertaking: Festival 8.  Held October 30th, 31st and November 1st at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA, it was the band’s eighth festival and attracted over 40,000 fans.

An American band based in Ocean Beach, San Diego, California, who describe their music as "a fusion of acoustic rock and blues with reggae, hip-hop, and punk".  As a band, they have released eight albums (two live) with their sixth studio album, entitled 'Slightly Not Stoned Enough To Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid', released on July 22, 2008.

The band was originally signed by Bradley Nowell from the band Sublime to his label Skunk Records while still in high school.

Fresh Fest

Fresh Fest featuring EPMD, DOUG E. FRESH, SLICK RICK, BIZ MARKIE, BIG DADDY KANE and CHUBB ROCK is one of the season’s top events. The star-powered line-up sells out venues around the country.

EPMD's name comes from the members' names Erick and Parrish Making Dollars" (later "Erick and Parrish Millennium Ducats"), referencing its members, emcees Erick Sermon ("E") and Parrish Smith ("PMD"). The group has been active for more than 20 years (1986–present), and is one of the most prominent acts in East coast hip hop.

The first and best human beatbox in the rap world, Doug E. Fresh amazed audiences with his note-perfect imitations of drum machines, effects, and often large samples of hip-hop classics.

Slick Rick foreshadowed and epitomized the attitude of many rappers during the late '80s and early '90s, with gold chains, and his trademark eye-patch.

The legendary Biz Markie brings more than 15 years of solid hip-hop acumen and an overwhelming fan-base that stretches from New York City to Japan to Europe.

Big Daddy Kane was the ultimate lover man of rap's first decade as an Afrocentric consciousness-raiser or smooth urban soul crooner.

Chubb Rock released several commercially successful hip hop albums in the early 1990s. A former National Merit Scholar, Chubb Rock was a pre-med student who dropped out of Brown University to pursue his musical career.

George Jones

George Jones brings his heralded show back to Portsmouth. He is cited during the past 20 years as “the greatest living country singer.”

Jones received the 2002 Medal of Arts from President George W. Bush at a White House ceremony. The National Medal of Arts is the nation’s highest honor for artistic excellence.

His 50th anniversary as a recording artist was celebrated in 2004 with the release of a three disc set featuring one hit from each year of his career and a two-hour PBS-TV special that featured a star-studded cast paying homage to Jones by singing his songs.

Jackson Browne with David Lindley

Jackson Browne with David Lindley is among concert attendees’ most requested appearance during the venue’s 10 years.

Accompanying the tour is Browne’s band of almost 20 years: Kevin McCormnick (bass), Mark Goldenberg (guitars), Mauricio Lewark (drums) and Jeff Young (Keyboards, backing vocals). They’re joined by Chavonne Stewart and Alethea Mills, who have been with the group since 2008.

On record and in performance, Browne and Lindley have a musical association reaching back almost 40 years, beginning with 1973’s "For Everyman", and on classics including "Late For The Sky" and "The Pretender", the latter two both on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Browne and Lindley release an eagerly awaited new live 2-CD set called "Love Is Strange" on May 11.

About nTelos Wireless Pavilion

The nTelos Wireless Pavilion is an architecturally striking entertainment venue on Portsmouth's waterfront that has become a landmark and a premier regional attraction.  Part of the lush five-acre Harbor Center Festival Park, the nTelos Wireless Pavilion is unlike anything in Hampton Roads - or anywhere else for that matter.
