NORFOLK

A 21-year-old Virginia Beach man was killed in a crash this morning on Interstate 264.

The crash happened shortly before 3 a.m. in the eastbound lanes near Ballentine Boulevard, about one mile from Broad Creek, said Sgt. Michelle Cotten, Virginia State Police spokeswoman.

The driver of a 2006 Acura was speeding when the car ran off the left side of the road and hit a retaining wall, according to Cotten. The car then ran off the right side of the road, hit a guard rail, vaulted into the air and hit a light pole and control box before flipping over several times and ejecting all three people inside it.

The man who died was driving the car, according to Cotten. He was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene. The other two people in the car were taken to a hospital with injuries that weren't considered life-threatening.

The identity of the man who was killed was being withheld until his relatives could be contacted, Cotten said.

The two right lanes were closed until shortly before 6 a.m.
