Lakeview Elementary School has received $3.7 million in federal stimulus money to address humidity and mold problems that have contributed to asthma in students.
Asthma among elementary students in Portsmouth has increased 25 percent over the past two years, according to a statement from U.S. Sens. Jim Webb and Mark Warner and Rep. Bobby Scott.
The money will be used to replace the school's roof, ceilings, windows, doors and venting system. The fixes are expected to save the city's school system more than $6,000 a year in energy costs, according to a news release from the legislators.
