VIRGINIA BEACH
A new report says a wind farm off the coast of Virginia Beach wouldn't affect Navy or NASA operations in the area.
The report by the Virginia Coastal Energy Research Consortium also says offshore wind energy could supply 10 percent of the commonwealth's electricity needs.
Researchers identified 25 potential lease spots for turbines in an area 12 miles off Virginia Beach's coast.
State Sen. Frank Wagner says at least three companies have expressed interest in developing wind farms.
Proponents say Virginia's coastal area has ideal winds to turn the massive blades of offshore turbines.

Correction to Virginia offshore wind article
The above article seems to have made a mistake in its condensation of information contained in a recent ODU press release. For more accurate information, please see the press release at:
www.odu.edu/ao/news/index.php?todo=details&id=21513
As stated in that press release, our research indicates that 10% of Virginia’s electricity needs could be provided by 25 Outer Continental Shelf lease blocks that we’ve identified as having a total commercial potential of 3,200 megawatts. A 600-megawatt offshore wind farm could supply more like 2%, rather than 10%, of the Commonwealth’s electricity needs.

FROM THE PILOT: We changed the story to better reflect the report. Thanks for the note.
WIND FARMS
they are going to test them first in the James River. The first one will be built in the river adjacent to the Monitor Merrimac Bridge Tunnel. It will stand approx 450ft tall.
Turbines
Watt?
lease/backyard/power co
1--Who in the world owns the ocean floor 12 miles out to get rent $$??
2--I would love to have a turbine in my backyard but....
3--How does Dominion Power give us credit for our power?
Do we plug directly in and how to switch back and forth?
Will they charge more for this 'service' and will they find ways to deny us (like health insurance companies?)
This is common in Germany where they have the biggest wind farm--what a beautiful sight to accidentally come upon. In rural areas power is fed back into the grid and powers the whole village!
Wow!

Offshore Wind Study at ODU
I am a MBA student at ODU. My concentration is Maritime and Port Management. If you are someone in the maritime industry (fishing, shipping, tugs, etc.) and would like to discuss this issue with me for an independent study that I am doing on the impact that an offshore windfarm may have on the local maritime industry, you can reach me at "ghodg007 odu.edu".
Lease?
I would hope it would be free due to the huge investment this project would take before it even produces 1 watt.
distance does make a difference
If Edison had won out over Westinghouse/Telsa then we would need power stations all over - almost at every block. But he did not.
The main problem with our energy production is that most is lost with the transmission lines. The technology to have minimal loss is not available on a national scale. All the hype of alternative energy is really hype because to create the energy needs will mean more localized power production but will each face NIMBY. The energy lost in the 12 miles off the coast to the home is gone. NIMBY is destroying our country by increasing our need for foreign oil. But the challenge is not control of the back yard but who gets to control who selects the back yard.
Alternative energy such a wind farms could be changed to wind farm without the S. Get a turbine in every neighborhood and such.
"Germany's First Offshore Wind Farm Goes Online"
Germany is doing it...
http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/0,1518,691699,00.html
To protect the sensitive Wadden Sea (Wattenmeer) tidal flats and wetlands, which stretch along Germany's North Sea coast, as well as to head off the tourism industry's likely protests against giant towers along beaches, the German government has required offshore wind farms to be sited far away from coastlines. The farms must be at least 30 kilometers (19 miles) away from beaches, which is significantly more than in other EU countries.
