Seeking elections, Norfolk congregants sue church, pastor

Posted to: News Norfolk

NORFOLK

A few hundred members filed through First Baptist Church of Lambert's Point last Wednesday night, armed with ballots for a slate of deacons, trustees and officers.

The ballots, and prayers, came with a few secular touches: a court-appointed commissioner and a security guard to assure fair elections.

At the century-old congregation in Lamberts Point, state has met church.

A group of members sued their church last year, seeking valid elections they claim had not been held for 10 years.

"We're not angry with anyone," said James H. Robinson Jr., a retired public school administrator, third generation member and plaintiff. "We're sorry we had to do this."

The. Rev. Anthony C. Paige, the church's pastor and defendant in the suit, said the dispute stems from older members reluctant to embrace a different vision of the church's ministry. The church has stepped up local programs to feed the poor and has done outreach to Africa, he said.

"We're doing things a little differently than we did in the 1950s," he said.

The plaintiffs claim they have been deprived of a voice in church leadership. They charge that their civil rights have been violated by the denial of regular, valid elections as called for in the church's constitution. The suit also states the church leadership failed to provide an annual audit for 2008.

Robinson said the plaintiffs - seven members who have each belonged to the church at least 50 years - are willing to embrace new missions. But they're also concerned about the church's finances and future.

Church disputes are common but seldom end up in court, said Brad Jacob, a law professor at Regent University.

When courts do weigh in on a church dispute, however, they treat the church like a business or an association, he said. Courts will rule on bylaws, for example, but will stay away from questions about religious issues, Jacob said.

According to the suit, First Baptist Church of Lambert's Point had not had a valid election of trustees or deacons for the p ast 10 years. It further claims that "various office holders" have continued to hold office to solidify Paige's "complete power over the governance of the church."

Marie Boyd, a member since 1961, said she attends regularly, has tithed part of her salary and served as clerk for 20 years. She said the church has not been transparent in its operations. "We don't mind Rev. Paige making changes," she said, "but let him come before the church."

Robinson said a new, multimillion-dollar expansion of the church on 38th Street never received proper approval from the congregation. He said he has also looked at recent financial reports, and said the church has been running deficits for the p ast five years.

Paige declined to talk about specific church finances, but said it has embarked on a new effort to build a performing arts center. "We're in a growth mode," he said.

Paige, the pastor since 1990 and former city p lanning c ommission member, hired Mayor Paul Fraim, a lawyer, to represent him and the church leadership.

In January, Circuit Court Judge Charles Poston ordered a new election and appointed a lawyer, George A. Anderson Jr., as commissioner in chancery to observe, monitor and supervise the balloting.

Fraim and Anderson did not return phone calls seeking comment.

Jacob said there are other ways to settle church disputes - appealing to the church hierarchy or using a Christian mediator to negotiate a compromise.

But when a suit is filed, Jacob said, "You virtually never end up with reconciliation."

In an interview before the election, Paige said he could work with whoever was elected to the supervisory boards. "It's something that needed to be dealt with," he said. "We are a democratic organization."

According to both sides, Wednesday's election settled little. Participants said at least one nominee's name was inadvertently left off the ballot.

The church is scheduled to hold another election next month.

No contradiction

Jehovah's Witnesses do not have Pastors or Reverends but Elders who DO have regular everyday jobs. They don't preach. They give talks of learning the Bible Scriptures and of course THEY DON'T GET PAID. Do I need to explain it to you more? I do not think I was contradicting myself.

That is why I am no longer a Baptist con't...

(as far as paying your required consumer bills, taxes etc..) Pastors Ministers and others should not be paid for preaching the word. Salvation is free. All men are suppose to work for a living (Genesis 3: 17-19). Jesus was a carpenter. He earn his money for daily living. Not for preaching the word. Preaching the Word is a gift and privilege from Jehovah\God. Lastly, in the news, Pastors, Priest, Reverends, and Ministers etc are usually either molesting young and\or teenage kids, stealing money, commiting fornication, gay, or most of all arguing with one another--Pastor against Pastor or member; Minister against Minister arguing over members that has been stolen from them (False Teachers). Yes FBLP is a private church. It doesn't belong to God. That is why I'm an up and becomming Jehovah's Witness. I get Bible and reference material for free. And the people are so nice and friendly (no arguing whatsoever). At leaat they say good-morning when they see you walk in the Kingdom Hall. How can they build so many Halls with no arguements.

Thats why I am no longer Baptist

I have been studying the volume :"What does the Bible REALLY Teach" it was a book given to me for free from the Jehovah's Witnesses. This book really teaches you and gives you the proper understanding of the Bible. I have compared both the Holy Scriptures (NIV) Bible and the King James\ NIV versions. Both have the same meanings and understandings except the King James\NIV versions use the name Jehovah 4 times, and of course the Holy Scriptures Bible uses Jehovah and God many times. The point I am making is this. Many Pastor, Ministers etc. (who of course are the Pharisees-People of false teachings) only preach what they want you to hear (saying verses over and over again, and giving mechanical prayers not truly from the heart). In fact also, no individual should not get paid for preaching the word-- for salvation is free. If you are called by God and you have disciples, then they are suppose to GO OUT and preach the good news(Mark 16: 15-20) not for individuals to come and find them. As for tiething, tiething is a Old testament Mosaic Law. In the NEW TESTAMENT, Jesus informs us of new laws. Give what you can give!! These are the last days!! Render onto Ceasar first!!.. (as for

LOL!

And you don't think Jehovah's Witnesses don't have their own agenda? :) You just contradicted yourself by saying that pastors and ministers are people of false teachings.

How funny.

Church lawsuit

A subsequent commentator suggested leaving and going to another church. That is the most sensible solution, fits in with Bible teachings and would probably get more attention for their cause. It's called voting with your feet.

give me a break

if you do not like what the church is doing -- just simply go to another church -- mission accomplished

Church lawsuit

(Somehow, my previous comment got garbled. I have re-written it to remove the garbling)
I have noticed some comments condemning the members of FBLP for taking their case to court because of the Biblical injunction against lawsuits. While I have no involvement in this case whatsoever and have no reason to do so, I am a member of a church that took a case to court a few years ago. We took some heat over it. But I was never in a situation in which I could respond. But ever since, I have wanted to remind people that no matter what St. Paul said, the Bible tells us that he appealed a case to Caesar when he was in trouble (see Acts 25).
According to a tantalizingly similar account of a shipwreck on Malta (maybe the same, maybe not) by Josephus the historian (works of Josephus).
among the shipwrecked passengers were a group of Jewish priests being taken to Caesar about a problem that he (Josephus) considered minor. If Paul was in that group, he was sent to the Emperor Nero and received assistance from Sabina Poppaea, Nero's wife and empress.
Think about it.

HERE WE GO AGAIN

Why in the world did this happen? This should have been settled...should have never been.
