Tennis

First Colonial’s Shannon Hudson completed a sweep through the Beach District with another straight-set victory, while Princess Anne’s Sam Stearney won a three-set match in the Beach District singles finals on Tuesday.

Hudson defeated Ocean Lakes’ Kathleen Dawson 6-2, 6-0. Stearney outlasted First Colonial’s Matt Yates 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 for the boys title.

Hudson and Rachel Luke won the girls’ doubles title with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Cox’s Faith Atiso and Jenny Lee. Yates and Matt Taylor topped Stearney and Connor Hoerr for the boys’ doubles crown.

Garrett Brooks hit a two-out, two-run single in the top of the eighth inning as the Bruins edged the Grizzlies and stayed tied atop the Southeastern District with Great Bridge.

Western Branch’s Nicholas Thompson allowed just four hits to outduel Cody Cox, who tossed a three-hitter.

Kellam’s Janelle Fittro hit a two-run double in the third inning and teammates Marian Guidry, Lisa Reaume, Haley Tabora and Melissa Zitt finished with two hits each.

The Dolphins (15-1, 13-1) remain one game ahead of Kellam (12-3, 12-2) in the Beach standings.

Kelly Chesson scored two second-half goals to give coach Joe Tucei his 227th career victory – the most by any Patriots coach.

Tucei, who coached the boys team for 11 seasons and girls for the last seven, passed longtime girls coach Janet Rowland on the school’s career victories list.
