Activists plan anti-drilling protests in Virginia Beach

Posted to: Environment News Offshore Drilling Virginia

VIRGINIA BEACH

Environmental activists angry about the Gulf of Mexico disaster are mobilizing to keep oil rigs off of Virginia's coast and to push for renewable energy.

The Sierra Club, Oceana and other organizers are heading to the coast on June 26 for "Hands Across the Sand" — a human line in the sand against drilling. A similar event was held on Florida beaches.

Virginia events are scheduled for two locations in Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Hampton. Other activities are also planned along inland waterways.

The Obama administration canceled the planned Virginia sale of offshore leases following the spill.

If only the Trolls put their bikes where their mutts were

We would not have the traffic problem in tunnels and roads in tidewater.(and the drunk troll problem on Shore Drive I might add)

Go, Observe, Learn, don't Assault Anyone

I certainly hold my own general opinions on politics and the environment, but I don't believe everyone who protests is a commie, liberal, eco-Nazi, what-have-you.

I protested the second Iraq war - more out of frustration since it was a done deal - and I'd worked with the military directly in my civilian job. 'Met all kinds from all over. Sure, some were career protesters picking up where Vietnam left off, and were directly linked to MoveOn, etc. It's why I made and carried my own signs - trying to be somewhat independent as bigger interests manipulate the masses. Most, especially at smaller activities, would talk about their own complex thoughts regarding the war and the demonstrations. Some were war vets. One couple deliberately stood far from anyone else; the husband said heck, get the oil; the wife wanted the troops home, but neither were hostile to anyone.

Troop-haters? 'Met not-a-one, but I recall the "pro-troop" demonstrators who raged in my face and stopped just short of assault. In L.A. there were anti-war protestors attacking other people. Sad either way.

I can be categorical too sometimes, but I recognize that we're all being lied to and manipulated, and

Just like Florida?

'Not sure about this. What I saw reported on network news ('forget the channel) was a prayer line. There was no mention of the Sierra Club, or in fact, who was behind it. Then again, who are we supposed to believe these days anyway? This article really doesn't go into any depth, interviewing any organizers - can't stir the pot, just take up page-space.

are we up to the challenge?

Are we up to the challenge this environmental disaster presents?

The US is the most industrious, smartest, best country in the world, right?

If that is true, we ought to be able to lead the world

in development of renewable sources of energy.

Or are we just fooling ourselves?

If we really are the "best" it is time to prove it!

Protestors

The people protesting drilling and are now calling for Nuclear Power are the same one who protested against Nuclear Power 30 years ago.

Oh really?

did you talk to ALL of them? Or are you
just assuming?
