Beach councilman drops resolution on ground zero mosque

Posted to: News Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH

Councilman Bill DeSteph has dropped his effort to get the City Council to join him in opposing plans for a Muslim community center near the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan.

DeSteph sent a letter last week to New York City political leaders that said "the citizens of Virginia Beach and the Commonwealth of Virginia" are opposed to the center. Mayor Will Sessoms and Vice Mayor Louis Jones criticized DeSteph for using city letterhead to write the letter and for portraying city and Virginia residents as agreeing with his opinion.

DeSteph said Tuesday that he will not bring a resolution on the issue before council members as he'd planned - at least not now.

"I'm going to wait and see what the will of council is," he said. "I'm not going to push if people don't want to support it."

These guys have been on the

These guys have been on the force for 42 and 39, gimme a break. Are they hurting for cash?

Too much hate to see the real issue

Wake up Virginia Beach. Your councilman used the 9/11 attack to further his political agenda. He is only out for publicity. That is sick. What he did was wrong. He is not the voice of Virginia, nor I. furthermore, it is really non of our business what New York does. You people who want to fight at the drop of a hat should put your council to task on your own comunity. Where it belongs. The sad part of it all is that he got what he wanted: his 15 minutes.

If...

...you think this is nothing but a Mosque... learn what it will be named after and get back to me. Great Mosque of Córdoba, I'll wait.

Not just New Yorkers died in the Twin Towers and it is our business as Americans to do the right thing, if it was reversed then what? How is it we are the only intolerant ones?

Bill is correct

The building of a mosque especially at Ground Zero is viewed by Muslims as a decisive victory over the infidels in Islam's march to establish its ultimate goal: the submission of all others to Islam and to Sharia Law.Islamic Sharia allows, among other ruthless practices, to beat women to discipline them, and that Sharia also still sanctions slavery. This mosque is headed by an Imam, Feisal Abdul Rauf, founder of the Cordoba Initiative. The Imam said, in Sydney, Australia, that "The US and the West must acknowledge the harm they have done to Muslims before terrorism can end.We have a Muslim Imam, who aspires to implement Sharia in the West, and who is a slick and eloquent speaker disguised as a "moderate" Muslim. He uses Taqiyya, the Islamic concept which calls for Muslims to lie to the enemy and deceive him based on Quran 3:28, to fool non-Muslims and those who are gullible or ignorant, and who play right into his hands."We all know that while Muslims can build mosques and practice their religion freely in the West, non-Muslims are forbidden to do the same in Islamic countries.
Over the last 1400 years, Muslims have murdered roughly 270 million kafirs [non-Muslims]; 60 million Ch

What a deliberately deceitful rant

You should be ashamed for trying to peddle this garbage as fact. A 5 second google search on 'Taqiyya' revealed your twisting of words to try to justify your warped sense of reality. Stop trying to make the world a more devisive, hateful place.

You go Bill!

You have my support and the support of a lot of red blooded VB American Citizens. These politically correct though police can't silence the majority of Traditional Americans. I say let's ship all these left wing commentators calling you a bigot off to the many peace loving muslim countries out there . . . Do they show respect for religious freedom . . . NO. Do they respect human rights . . . NO. Do they respect freedom of speech . . . NO. Bill has a right to voice the thoughts of his constituents. I bet if you polled the VB citizens (not lefty pilot readers) as to whether there should be a "muslim" center near the World Trade Center . . . the majority of VB citizens would say . . . NO. What did the muslim terrorists say before attacking the US WTC . . . allahu akbar??? . . . so lets build them a "center" at ground zero . . . NO!

Bill Has Our Backs

You go Bill. As far as I'm concerned you can write a letter for my state of Florida including us in support of your stance on this issue and I'll send you the letterhead. Many people do not understand that according to the Quran, Muslims are to treat infidels (the rest of us) with friendly outward appearances, but should curse them in their hearts. That said, not every Muslim is a danger, but there are some that pose a threat. Precautions must be taken and we the people need to be smart. Political correctness is going to be the death of America if we keep it up. What really amazes me is that those Americans who are Muslim sympathizers to the Nth degree have no clue what's going on because they are simply hell-bent on being "politically correct" when what they really are is politically & culturally ignorant of a holy book from 7th century Mohammad that says such things as women should breast-feed strange men. As a woman I'm just glad I don't live in Iran. As an American, I am offended by this cultural takeover of NYC.

DeSteph

Stick to your elected area, you may have sufficient screwballs out ther to re-elect you.....Trying to run New York isn't your business!

Why is this guy is so

Why is this guy is so concerned about New York's business? What area does he represent? He has to be one of the most bufoonish characters in local politics.

His Seat...

Is one of two at-large seats on the council.
