"Where do they come from? I can't say. But I bet that they have come a long, long way."
- From the 1960 Dr. Seuss book, "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish"
Something fishy will be going on starting Saturday at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center in Virginia Beach. In honor of World Oceans Day on Tuesday, the museum will offer a four-day celebration with a theme taken from Dr. Seuss' "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish." The book was published 50 years ago.
Events include a scavenger hunt, fishy face-painting, puppet shows and Dr. Seuss stories. The event aims to honor the oceans of the world, celebrate their products and teach about marine life.
World Oceans Days runs 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday through Tuesday at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center, 717 General Booth Blvd., Virginia Beach. Event is free with museum admission: $17 adults, $12 children 3-11. More details at 385-3474, www.virginiaaquarium.com.
And it just so happens that the 22nd annual Clean the Bay Day is from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.
Tires, plastic bottles and bags, cigarette butts and aluminum cans are but a few examples of pollution in our waterways and along our shorelines. Volunteers removed 102 tons of debris from 475 miles of waterways in 2009.
