CURRITUCK

Two North Carolina coastal counties benefited from the emerging summer tourism season.

Currituck County’s unemployment rate fell in April to the lowest in the state at 5.8 percent from 8.4 percent in March. Dare County’s unemployment rate fell to 9.4 percent from 14.4 percent, the largest drop in unemployment statewide.

For all of North Carolina, the rate fell to 10 percent from 10.9 percent. Camden County unemployment fell to 7.3 from 8.5 percent. Pasquotank County fell to 9.2 from 9.6.

Warm weather brings visitors to the Currituck and Dare Outer Banks prompting more hiring by tourism industry. Typically both counties have among the lowest unemployment rates in the state during the summer. But in good times rates fall below 5 percent and have fallen below 3 percent. Over the winter, rates reached highs not seen since the early 1980s.

For Currituck, rates are better than they were this time last year. In April 2009, Currituck’s rate fell to 7.1 percent from 8.5 in March 2009. Dare’s rate is a little higher this year than last with April 2009 rates falling to 9.7 from 14.6 in March 2009.

What should they get?

I'm curious to hear what you think they should get for those types of jobs. Ten, fifteen, twenty bucks an hour? Then, if you get that piece figured out, maybe you can explain why it is they'd be looking for those types of jobs at 7.50 an hour anyway. This is the land of opportunity, not entitlement. Or at least it's not supposed to be. It is getting closer and closer all the time though. It's a tiered society, some do real good and make good money, some don't. If 7.50 isn't what you want in life, go for something better. The tools are there. No disrespect intended for those that are humping it out there trying to get by and better themselves. Keep struggling, it pays off.

probably less than $7.50

First, wages should be market driven, not government mandated.

Point of my comment, that you missed, is they are not jobs a man can, build a house, educate kids, and buy his health care on. Oh, that's right, we don't need to buy health care, it's all taken care of.

not quite

Health care is only taken care of if you happen to be employed by a large company and living in 2014 . . .

Currituck always has the lowest employment rates in the summer . . . every year.

And to those who think you can just create a job that pays the bills by trying really, really hard in the "land of opportunity," wow, really?

And those employed in Currituck

are all earning a whopping $7.50 an hour.

Really? Currituck is fairly

Really? Currituck is fairly wealthy. I doubt you could afford my home.

and you earned it,

every penney of it you earned it Currituck County. Way to GO!

Regardless, please stay off

Regardless, please stay off the grass. The road is private as well.
