Norfolk Moose Lodge 39 on Kempsville Road was knocked down this morning to make way for The Tide light rail project.
The giant jaws of a piece of heavy machinery tore away at the building piece by piece this morning shortly after 10 a.m.
The site will be converted to a free park-and-ride lot with 266 spaces for commuters, with a portion of the land to be used for bus service related to the project, according to Hampton Roads Transit. The lodge has relocated to a building at The Gallery at Military Circle shopping mall.
The lot will have a train platform and an electrical substation that will convert alternating current to direct current for the light rail trains, according to HRT. The substation is nearly complete.
Seven houses and one business also were demolished to make way for the lot and station, according to HRT.
The Tide is scheduled to begin transporting passengers in May 2011.

LIGHT RAIL TO NOWHERE!
EVMS TO NEWTON ROAD is this a joke or a sybolic waste of my tax money.
Is there even a public parking lot near either of these start and stop points. The city should change the name from light rail to the I64 commuter train because it does not travel a good 50 miles.

people complain
People complain about the traffic problems in this area. So the state and the cities come up with solutions to fix the transportation problem. Right away, people complain that it is not going to work or its a waste of money. for example, this light rail system. When Norfolk came up with the Idea, I read a lot of negative comments before it even became a reality. like its a waste of money , who is going to ride the baby choo choo and people who going to ride the thing are retarded. I can go on with the comments . I read today that someone complained that the people who going to ride the rail is low. How does he know? does he have a crystal ball. The rail is not even running yet. I will bet you that the people who complain about the rail are going to ride it In my opinion, People complain just to complain.
Oops
To "raise" a building is to build it; to "raze" a building is to tear it down.
A free park and ride? $100 million overrun
Have'nt we as taxpaying citizens already paid for this since the project is costing $232 million (orig) and now has a cost overrun of $100 mil. The project includes local, state and federal tax dollars, so it would seem nothing is free. How about the free parking garages at Town Center? It would seem the money had to come from somewhere, the taxpayers perhaps. I guess in the Va Pilot world it sounds better to the masses if they believe things are free. The cost of construction is not yet complete however "Superman" Shucet ($40,000.00 a month salary paid by taxpayers) guarantees it wont cost a "penny more". Time will tell. Wait until the taxpayers of Norfolk get the annual bill for the subsidy to run the empty trains. It is estimated to be in the $8-$10 million range.
I can just see Randy Wright blowing that whistle right now. Seated next to him is his "conservative" friend Gov Bob McD. It seems the laugh is on us the taxpayer, but sadly it is not free either.
Light Rail Equals Heavy Taxes.
what is the subsidy for I-264
How much are we tax payers subsidizing I-264, I-64, military highway, so and so on. Moving people a;ways takes a subsidy. Light rail is just one more way to move peoploe.
Excuse Me......
Maybe I'm missing something here, but where does Kempsville Rd intersect with the rail line from Newtown Rd, across Broad Creek, across the old Beltline tracks, and up to Norfolk State.....
I think the light rail is a
I think the light rail is a big joke and a huge waste of money. The number of people that are going to ride this is so low its just making people lose their homes and have to move.
Okay, you're marked down
Okay, you're marked down as thinking it's a waste of money. No more need to post the exact same thing on every single article that mentions anything about it.
Those damn priorities again
You know what I’d like. When I flush the toilet I’d like for it not to bubble up in the street. I’d just like to drive my car down the street without the wheels being knocked off by potholes. Or for that matter, I’d just like to be able to safely walk down the street, or even know that I’m safe in my own home. I’d like to know the kids in our schools are learning how to say more than “would you like fries with that?” But no, lets spend all our money on trains that run all over town going where the cars and busses already go. Good thing too because its hard to afford a car when all you can say is “would you like fries with that?” But thankfully we don’t have to make choices like that because we have an unlimited supply of money.
