Two young, hopeful rappers, Craig Mounger and William Bonney Jr., started a verbal duel one night in the front yard of a Denby Park home.
Urged on by a crowd, Mounger, known as "Stress," and Bonney, known as "Trey Pound," swapped barbs in rap and rhyme. The pace quickened and the insults grew darker, witnesses said.
The rhyme turned to shoves. A witness said Mounger drew a gun and Bonney asked, "Are you going to shoot me over a rap?"
The battle ended with Bonney dead.
On Monday, a jury found Mounger, 22, guilty of second-degree murder and use of a firearm while committing a felony in the October 2008 shooting death of Bonney, 24. The panel recommended a 25-year prison sentence.
Witnesses during the three-day trial described a confrontation, known as a "rap battle," that started between two quick-witted rappers but escalated to a shoving match and a single gunshot.
Prosecutor James Entas said Mounger came to the battle armed with a pistol, while Bonney had no weapon "except his tongue."
Defense attorney Kevin Diamonstein said several eye witnesses called by the prosecution had felony criminal histories and could not be trusted. He added that several had sentences pending in Norfolk courts, and one jailhouse informant requested a re-evaluation of his term.
Mounger fled to Puerto Rico after the shooting and was found by federal marshals and extradited eight months later, according to court records.
Witnesses testified that a group gathered on the night of Oct. 13, 2008, at a house in the 7600 block of MacDonald Road rented by Drew Clark.
Clark testified that people were hanging out and smoking pot inside and around the home. Clark and a friend started joking around and rapping, he said. He knew Mounger and Bonney were both "very good" rappers, he testified.
The group encouraged the two men to square off in a rap battle, witnesses said. Friends of both men testified that Mounger and Bonney did not know each other before that night.
Clark said he and several others watched Bonney and Mounger duel in rhymes and trash talk.
"It was just freestyle," he said, "going back and forth."
Antonio Fenner, Bonney's friend, testified that when the freestyle rap became more aggressive, he tried to bring Bonney inside to calm down.
Bonney spat out an insult against a gang and it enraged Mounger, witnesses said. At least two witnesses said they also heard Bonney call Mounger "short."
Mounger stood 5 feet 5 inches tall and Bonney stood a few inches taller, according to court records. The two started wrestling in the front yard. At some point, a gun went off and a bullet struck Bonney once in the right side, according to testimony.
When police arrived, Mounger was gone.
Clark testified that he initially told police that a tall, light-skinned black man shot Bonney. Clark, who has been convicted of two felonies, later changed his story.
Marlow Malone, an inmate briefly assigned to a cell across from Mounger, said Mounger described how, after the shooting, he shaved his dreadlocks, pretended to be a young boy and flew to Puerto Rico.
Under cross examination, Malone said he hoped his testimony would convince a judge to reduce his prison sentence for drug possession.
Bonney's family knew him as "little Bill" or just plain Bill, they said. William Bonney Sr. said his son spent two years in the Army, served in Iraq and returned to take classes at Old Dominion University. He also worked for the city of Norfolk.
Bonney Sr. knew little of his son's rap aspirations until one day when he slid a CD into the radio of his father's truck. "Wow," he told his son, "that's great."
Mounger is scheduled to be sentenced in September.

RIP Will
Its terrible many of you are trying to turn both people involved into aggressors in a nation founded on free speech. Its understandable if you do not listen to rap music, but elton john, bob dylan, and the grateful dead don't appeal to every one. Will was a close friend of mine and we enjoyed to make music. We used to link up every week and record a few tracks in my studio. All he was doing was something he enjoyed, which both agreed to do.... I dont think his death was justified by a long shot, as well as many as your replies to this article. Will was a great person, in the time i knew him i'd say that he was my best friend. My prayers goes out to Wills family and all his friends Craig will serve his time i guess... Its not quite the type of justice id opt for but they found him first....

RAP
Ok these comments went from funny to stupid and back to funny again. Gun toters to gun activists, speech activists. Rap Music has always been a form of music that preached Cop Killin, Ho slapping, pimping, doing drugs, dealing drugs, raping and other sexual acts! Freedom of expression they call it, embarrasing and an insult, I call it. What it comes down to is One person killed another is cold blood, end of story.
Rap Battle!!!!!
I'm shaking my head at the fact that SOME of the bloggers are REAL ignorant, but I'm not surprised! A mother has lost a child! Hurt is felt by so many, and all the racist and bigoted people who blog have NO respect for life! Good! "Express" (and I use the term lightly) your opinion with out looking like a complete FOOL next time! Grow up INBREEDS because; MAYBE NOT IN A "RAP BATTLE" BUT YOU COULD FEEL THE SAME KIND OF PAIN! Well in my personal opinion, the negative bloggers probable wouldn't give a DAMN if it were a member of their family! This kind of negativity is WRONG ON SO MANY LEVELS! GROW UP DEMONS, and get rid of the unnecessary BS!
every single day
Every single day we read about another one or two people being shot to death in the Hampton Roads area.
I am so glad to know that the legal concealed carry permits out there are doing their job of protecting innocent people. What would we do without you? After all that was your reason for all of our stupid gun laws.
The guy that got shot wasn't
The guy that got shot wasn't carrying.
yes I know
I was being sarcastic! Gun advocates argue they conceal carry to protect the innocent. where were they when Mr Bonney was shot, because he was not carrying?
The type of people that have
The type of people that have concealed carry permits probably aren't the type of people that hang around and battle rap. Two different worlds. Using your premise of "where were they when Mr Bonney was shot" one could also make the argument of, where were the police? The police didn't protect this guy either, so it must be stupid to have police. I mean, think of all the crime that the police don't stop or solve.
and think about
Conceal carry permit gun owners CONSTANTLY claim or justify their laws that would help innocent people. There arguement is bogus. Wrong neighborhood? I don't think so. Conceal carry permit owners don't really help anyone, but their ego of being a big man around town.
I don't own a gun. I
I don't own a gun. I support gun rights. I couldn't care less about the loudmouths and their egos on either side of the debate. Ultimately, it's our constitutional right to bear arms. Why do you care so much if it makes some people feel safe to get a permit?
You say, "Conceal carry permit owners don't really help anyone..." Well, they don't really hurt anyone either. I haven't heard anything in the news lately about concealed carry permit holders having shoot outs in the street. Just thugs.
My favorite line
