Photos: 'Black widow' feasts on hot dogs in Norfolk contest

Posted to: Food News

Virginia resident Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas, next to Joe Tursi of Virginia Beach , downs the competition at the Nathan’s Famous hot dog eating qualifier at Norfolk’s MacArthur Center on Saturday.

Thomas, of Alexandria, won with 34 hot dogs in 10 minutes. She ate 35 but was penalized one because of the amount of “debris” left on the table. Tursi was second with 14. Thomas holds 37 competitive-eating world records and will represent Virginia at the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July contest in Coney Island, N.Y.

Unbelievable. Even a hotdog

Unbelievable. Even a hotdog eating contest is a opportunity for political soapboxing. You folks are sad.

Excuse Me,

I am not a bleeding-heart liberal, etc., etc., but I find it repulsive that people do this when there is so much hunger and starvation in the world. I'm sorry, but I fail to see any redeeming value in this. No more Nathan's for me, for sure.

rcamp

If you're not a "bleeding-heart liberal", you sure do a good imitation of one.

Stop hatin'

What many people don't understand is that most of the elite eaters exercise routinely and have a very healthy diet full of veggies, fruits, and lots of water. The highly competitive ones keep themselves in very good shape because fat will actually stop the stomach from expanding and hinder the amount of food you intake. Most of these guys and girls are healthier than the people that criticize their sport...And yes, it is a sport! Why else would ESPN televise it every year?? :)

"Why else would ESPN

"Why else would ESPN televise it every year??"

Money?

Even the Jackass movies made money. There are certain things that some people find amusing, and they are willing to give up some of their cigarette and MD 20\20 money to watch.

I love Sonya Thomas!

I love Sonya Thomas! I love seeing that little tiny woman kick those great big guy's butts. And she beats them BAD, not just by a hot dog or two.

Competition is what made America great. I know that competition is illegal now, and the government even pays people to fail police and firefighter exams, but I still respect it. I loved competition, before competition wasn't cool.

Great post! You are what

Great post!

You are what makes America what it is!

As for the Nascar Drivers........they are in wonderful condition and not one person here could drive almost 200 miles per hour for the lenght of these races, and understand the logistics and "laugh" all the way to the Bank!

I love those guys......they are super athletes and participate in so many charities! TRUE Americans!

That is "one group" that will NEVER be told that they can't have a prayer, the American anthem, and the American Flag before their race!

I would bet that those who make fun of Racing have never been to a race. Unless they count running from their recliner to the Fridge!

:)

Nascar Drivers are

Nascar Drivers are definitely athletes, they have to be. One driver explained it, try flying an F18 in the middle of 50 other F18's. Then trying doing it inside a hanger.

Bravo, Albert!

You did it!

GREAT post and how true!

XOXO

(although, doubt you will see this) :(
