Railroad adds Cincinnati to 'Heartland Corridor' project

Posted to: Business Norfolk Ports and Rail

Norfolk Southern Corp. is extending its "Heartland Corridor" double-stack rail project between the port of Hampton Roads and the Midwest to include Cincinnati.

The railroad announced Wednesday that it had received approval from the Ohio Rail Development Commission to move forward with work on its line from Columbus to Cincinnati. The nearly $6.1 million project involves increasing clearances at five locations, as well as adding tracks at its Rickenbacker Intermodal Terminal in Columbus.

The project is funded in part with $3.6 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 along with matching funds from Norfolk Southern and the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments.
