A cult favorite science fiction movie, "Serenity," will get a special screening for the benefit of charity Saturday at the Naro Expanded Cinema in Norfolk.
Writer-director Joss Whedon has scheduled screenings for charities in 39 cities this year. All proceeds from the Naro screening will go to Equality Now, an international women's rights organization, and Samaritan House, an organization devoted to preventing domestic violence and homelessness.
Set 500 years in the future, "Serenity" depicts survivors from Earth who have moved to another star system after depleting resources on this planet. Nathan Fillion stars as Captain Mal, the leader of a transport ship called Serenity. He and his crew struggle to protect a girl with telepathic powers from an evil government.
Billed as a combination Western and sci-fi film, "Serenity" has survived as a cult favorite. Its source is a canceled 2002 Fox television series, "Firefly," which aired only 11 of its 14 episodes. The film version received good reviews and opened strong in theaters but failed to make back its production costs until it was released on DVD. Through all its setbacks, a loyal group of fans has fought for it.

Too bad
Too bad I'm not in the area. Great show, great movie. I'd gladly pay to see it on the big screen.
