David Bernd, CEO of Sentara Healthcare, was named Thursday to head Old Dominion University's governing board.
Bernd, 61, will serve a two-year term as rector of the ODU Board of Visitors, replacing Hampton Commissioner of the Revenue Ross Mugler, who rotates off the board at the end of this month.
Sentara, a Norfolk-based nonprofit health conglomerate, operates eight acute-care hospitals. Bernd is a former chairman of the American Hospital Association Board of Trustees.
He has a bachelor's degree from the College of William and Mary and a master's degree in hospital and health administration from the Medical College of Virginia.
A Virginia Beach resident, he was appointed to the ODU board in 2008 by then-Gov. Timothy M. Kaine.
Other new officers elected by the board at its quarterly meeting Thursday are Pamela Kirk of Suffolk as vice rector and Kenneth Ampy of Midlothian as secretary.
Kirk and Ampy are both ODU alumni.
ODU offers more than 150 undergraduate and graduate degree programs at its main campus in Norfolk and three satellite locations. The state university expects to enroll 24,000 students this fall.
