10 reasons why we love Michael Buble

Posted to: Entertainment Music Norfolk Spotlight

In an age in which hot-ticket shows usually include militaristic dancers and shooting flames galore, Michael Bublé offers lower-key appeal.

He packs concert halls and arenas around the world standing behind a microphone, handsome in dark, tailored suits, crooning songs of love and longing written decades before his birth.

Bublé, 34, headlines the Ted Constant Convocation Center on Wednesday. His cognac-smooth, Frank Sinatra-influenced style seems an unlikely formula for commercial success in today’s auto-tuned pop world, in which hits are often determined by ringtone sales. But in the past six years, the two-time Grammy winner has sold 25 million albums worldwide.

Ten reasons for the sensation that is Michael Bublé:

1. He looks good. Camera-friendly features are always helpful, especially when you’re crooning love songs.

2. He can sing. Vocal talent isn’t a necessity for pop success, we know. But it comes in handy when you’re singing tunes made famous by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Brook Benton.

3. He seems like a likable guy from Canada. The country has a long history of producing pop acts with seemingly kind personalities and songs that are definitely sweet but not exactly sugary. Think Celine Dion, Bryan Adams and Sarah McLachlan.

4. He seems like the kind of guy you could take home to Mama. If you’re going to make a career singing your grandpa’s music, a polished, non-threatening persona is best.

5. He’s younger than 40 but has a deep appreciation for the American Songbook. His music shows Bublé has studied some of the greatest vocalists of all time.

6. He sings a credible version of Van Morrison’s “Moondance.” It is easily one of the best songs by the pop legend, and Bublé sings it well.

7. He chooses strong collaborators. Bublé’s producer David Foster, a fellow Canadian, excels at crafting glossy pop from any era. On “Crazy Love,” Bublé’s latest album, he shares the mic with Sharon Jones, Naturally 7 and Ron Sexsmith.

8. He occasionally writes his own material. As his interpretation of pop standards grows, Bublé sometimes flexes his songwriting muscles, displaying talent with the pen. He’s no Gershwin. But then again, who is?

9. He’s not a tabloid darling. Some pop acts with just a sliver of fame go out of their way to saturate TV, radio and the Net. Bublé doesn’t come off as a media addict. That’s refreshing.

10. He was a guest on Oprah. Bublé appeared on the talk-show queen’s stage last year when “Crazy Love” was released. Oprah’s approval either generates an instant fan base or expands an existing one. Immediately following his appearance on Oprah, “Crazy Love” debuted at No. 1 on Billboard charts and has since sold more than 4 million copies.
